We started Clementine's Bake Shop in 2012, as a way to increase the sales at our Farmer's Market Booth. It was an excellent way for us to use up the produce that we grew that wasn't pretty enough for sale at the Market. After our success during that first season, we decided to shift our focus from growing vegetables to exclusively creating value-added baked goods. Sales continued to increase, and in 2014 we took a giant leap of faith. We converted a room in our home into a certified kitchen. With this transition, we were able not only to expand our product line, but also able to wholesale our items to area cafes and grocery stores.
And while our small kitchen has served us well, it is no longer large enough for our needs. We are ready to grow once again, and this time into a brick and mortar bakery in downtown Berea!
With this transition we will not only be able to offer our full bakery line of scratch made pastries, pies, cookies, cakes, and breads; but we will be expanding our menu to include sandwiches made on our freshly baked breads and croissants, delicious soups, our chicken pot pies hot out of the oven, and weekly rotating specials. Always made in small batches, always from scratch.
But wait! There's more!
Have you heard of Noodle Nirvana? They're a noodle shop that is changing our community with their generosity - they donate a percentage of their proceeds one day a month, each month, for the entire year to one non-profit in the area. Donating like this has a huge impact on the non-profit. This idea struck a chord in us, and we want to do it too!
So, for our first year, we are pairing with Grow Appalachia! They're a non profit based in Berea, that helps to tackle food insecurity in the Appalachian region, by providing families with the tools and knowledge they need to grow their own food. But that's not all! They also help people in the region start community gardens, help farmers build high tunnels to extend their growing season, and much, much more! They plan to direct the funds donated by us towards their Berea Out of School Meals Program, a program which is dedicated to feeding youth under age 18, healthy food year-round. We think they are not only amazing, but an essential part of our community. Once a month, every month for a year, we will donate a percentage of our proceeds to them. Their work is important, and we want them to know we think so!
What we need
In order for us to make this monumental change a reality, we need your help! The funds raised from this Kickstarter will be used for the build-out of our production space - complete with professional plumbers and electricians, signage, a point of sale system, and other miscellaneous start-up costs (of which there are MANY!)
Please consider donating to our project to bring a bakery to Berea!
Risks and challenges
This project is both exciting and terrifying. For the past 5 years, we have done our best to bring our customers the highest quality baked goods at an affordable price; and for the past few months, we've done our very best at navigating lease negotiation, and the intricate details surrounding opening a bakery. We are new to some aspects of this expansion, but will approach them in the same way that we have approached everything about Clementine's this far: cautiously and directly.
We want this bakery to succeed. Since Clementine's beginning, we have worked harder at making it work than anything else. I know it sounds cliche, but there has definitely been a little blood, lots of sweat, and more than a few tears to get us to this point - and I am sure there will be more.
There will certainly be challenges ahead - that is true for everyone. We will do our best to deal with the challenges as they arise, and will not hesitate to seek out help when we need it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
