It has become an unfortunate trend amongst the ruthless aristocracy of Otravia to assassinate their rivals by poisoning during the toasts at their formal functions. In an attempt to discourage this, an elaborate and bizarre etiquette has developed around these toasts. However, this has only succeeded in weeding out the less cunning, ruthless and lucky, with those that remain being true masters of this deadly sport....
Toast! is a quick and casual social deduction game designed for the start or end of an evening's board gaming, or as an after dinner game. It features elegant and tactile components - goblets, napkins and glass pebbles representing wine and poison - to set the scene for a very civilised party game of deception and death!
In a round of play, goblets are arranged in a circle in the middle of the table, one in front of each player, such that players can’t see their contents. Players take turns to secretly place wine, poison or antidote tokens into the goblets, switching the goblets around, or using their characters special abilities. Each player has a target, and their aim is to ensure that, when the round is ended by someone calling for the Toast and the players all ‘drink’, their target’s goblet is poisoned and theirs is safe!

Each round, players draw a number of tokens (wine, poison or antidote), which they keep hidden under a napkin. They pick one of the other players as their target for the round.
In each player's turn, they have a choice of actions:
- Pour: Secretly place a wine token from your napkin into any goblet.
- Peek: Test the bouquet. Look into your own goblet to see what's in it.
- Rotate: Rotate the goblets one place clockwise or widdershins.
- Swap: Swap your goblet with that of another guest.
Once a player has used all their tokens, they can instead call the Toast...at which point the nobles 'drink' from the goblet in front of them. If there is more poison than antidote in your goblet, you're toast! You get victory points for surviving and if your target is poisoned, with a bonus if you manage both.
The challenge lies in balancing playing your tokens, learning about what's in the goblets, and wanting to position the goblets the way you need them for the Toast. That and trying to keep track of what you know as the goblets move around!
The game supports 2-12 players. The main rules are for 4-6 players, there are special rules to extend up to 12 players (where pairs of players play as a noble and their wine-taster), and there is a separate game mode for 2-3 players (a sort of Russian Roulette with goblets).

We intend to use Panda Game Manufacture, based on recommendation from some of the luminaries of the Kickstarter board game publishing community.
We have had a manufacturing quote from them based on their minimum order quantity of 1500, and they have been really helpful in providing the advice and information needed to prepare this project.
We intend to ship most copies of the game from China using Send From China by tracked air mail. SFC have a close relationship with PandaGM which should make for efficient and low-risk manufacture and shipping.
The value of the standard game for the purposes of import duty and VAT (which excludes the cost of delivery) is comfortably under the thresholds for most countries. For shipments to Canada and the few EU countries with particularly low thresholds (primarily Denmark, France, Greece and Sweden) we will use Friendly Shipping.
As for packaging, given a choice of bubble wrap, double bubble wrap, or an outer box, we intend to opt for the box. It doesn't add much compared to the costing of the shipping itself, and we feel the game box will be large enough to worry about crushed corners otherwise.

Risks and challenges
This will be my first published board game, so there will inevitably be unexpected things I'll discover along the way. However, I'm well accustomed from my day job to handling technical, creative and financial challenges and, armed with advice from published friends and the amazingly supporting Kickstarter board game publisher community, I should be able to avoid the seriously dumb pitfalls!
A good amount of the project is already behind us. After wide play-testing, I'm confident in the game design, and I am lucky enough to have talented and professional partners for graphic design and illustration, so the remaining risks I see are to do with production and shipping. The choice of established companies such as PandaGM and SFC aims to reduce this risk.
