PCAP (Paxos Contemporary Art Project) wants to take place on the island of Paxos, Greece, from June 22 until September 9 2018. The contemporary art event will take place in public places and it will be completely free.
It involves eight young and committed artists, all of them extremely motivated to measure themselves with Paxos’ extraordinary, wild nature.
The artists will intervene with existing structures of natural and architectural sites across the island, which are predominantly open-air. The exhibitions will include works on paper, sculpture, performance, mural, and audio/ video installations.
Paxos is found 14 kilometers south of Corfu (1-2 hrs by ferryboat) and 20 kilometers to the east is Parga on the mainland of Greece. The island of endless olive groves covers an area of some 19 square kilometers and is set in the Ionian Sea. Paxos has no airport, can only be reached by ferryboat and therefore, has been able to protect itself from the strain of modern tourism. The eastern coastline of the island is gentle compared to the west coast, which is bold and abrupt, with caves, arches and shear cliffs. The capital of Paxos is Gaios, on the Northern side is the village of Lakka and on the east side is the village of Loggos. Paxos has a permanent population of approximately 2,300 inhabitants.
The festival sites are located throughout the island. Some will also be visible by sea. The visitors may access them by car or foot. Public events with the artists will take place during the inauguration week in June (22 – 27). A website as well as an information- point in central Paxos will provide visitors with a detailed map of the sites of the festival as well as the surroundings. The map will also provide information about the artists and their work. Visitors will be able to navigate the festival as well as heritage-sites, natural reserves, restaurants, beaches, and other places of interest.
The founders of PCAP have a long history on the island. Inspired by its diverse sites, they have decided to invite artists to work in this unique environment. As a result of their love of the island and the Ionian Sea they have also developed the aim to increase healthy tourism to the island long term.
By promoting Paxos as a site for contemporary art to regular and new visitors, it is their goal to increase people’s sensitivity towards the environment of the island, preserve the islands heritage and be inspirational for similar projects on the island and abroad.
Risiken und Herausforderungen
The Paxos Contemporary Art Project is cleary a very ambitious project.
The idea was born from a deep passion towards the beautiful and unique nature of the island. At first it seemed like a dream to me, to realize such a sophisticated art project. However, when I began sharing my dream with artists, galleries, and friends from Paxos and abroad, I received an overwhelming response and a great deal of moral and practical support.
Without all these beautiful people this project would never be where it is now.
The biggest challenge I am facing now is to enthuse YOU and to receive your trust and financial support to make the PCAP happen.
The collected funds will be exclusively used to pay transport, permanence, and materials for the 8 artists, as well as a symbolic artist fee. The accommodations will be kindly offered by a number of friends in Paxos.
Thank you so much for your attention and support!Näheres zur Rechenschaftspflicht auf Kickstarter
