About

(Version française)

In 1946, you return from the front as an established war correspondent. Something fishy is happening in Washington D.C. and you intend to get to the bottom of it. Unfortunately, everyone seems intent on keeping you from completing your work... on the Hill and at the office.

The plot & characters are based on academic research assembled for the project.  The gender issues can more easily be highlighted in the historical context, but remain no less true today.  Each episode has you explore a specific facet and asks you to make hard choices on how you want to face it.  There is no right or wrong answer, and you get to see your choices affect the story.

For example, when you've just confirmed a senator's conflict of interest just in time for his re-election, you need the news to hit the front page.  Unfortunately, the editor feels that your credibility is insufficient to publish such an accusation.  He gives you the choice: publish the article under another (male) journalist's name, or keep the credit but potentially miss the opportunity to change the course of the election.  Which would you pick?

The writing structure is reminiscent of TV shows like Game of Thrones or even Ugly Betty, where it's not about winning, but the continual struggle and the addiction to hope.  We don't want a "right or wrong" message, but rather have the player take a stance on an issue despite potentially bleak options. By having more and more people aware of the debate and taking informed stances, the more the collective cultural position can shift and the situation improve.

The game's plot is divided into "seasons", with a larger story arc evolving through a series of "episodic" cases.  Your choices affect the ending of each episode, and the collected impact of those choices affect the season climax.

Words Are Power has an episode structure similar to detective games like Criminal Case or Mystery Crimes.  You need to earn your progress through the story, discover clues and perform in special events.

Interview Game Mode
Interview Game Mode

"Interview" is the most common game mode, where you talk to various game characters to discover leads.  Similar to Scrabble or Words With Friends, you place tiles on the board to form words.  The more points you score, the more progress you'll earn!

Interrogation Game Mode
Interrogation Game Mode

Interrogation is the first variation you'll play.  This event will come up when you need to get a confession out of a character, get them to reveal hidden information.  The board is covered in "fog" and by placing tiles you reveal more spaces.  Attain the target number of spaces

The game will feature even more game variations, like Decision that makes you choose how the story will progress and Talk Your Way Out where you must attain special exit tiles to escape a sticky situation!

Writer

Emilie Villeneuve has been a freelance writer for a dozen years. Gastronomy, culture, cinema & real people stories are amongst her favourite topics. She is the author of “La fille invisible”, an award-winning graphic novel describing the story of a young girl living with anorexia, based on academic research on the disorder. She has also co-written the books “Moutarde chou” (2012) & “Ste-Tite: Une histoire tirée par les chevaux” (2014). She also contributes regularly to the magazines “Elle Québec” and “Véro” as well as the newspaper “La Presse” & “La Presse +”.

Game Designer

Thiéry Adam has studied comics, film animation and project management. He has worked at Ubisoft & Ludia over the last 11 years as lead designer and senior producer. His past projects include Far Cry Instincts, Splinter Cell Conviction, Hell’s Kitchen, Jurassic Park Builder, and Waldo & Friends. Today he has ventured out on his own to help independents realize the projects of their dreams.

 Researcher

Marie-Eve Monette is a PhD student in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at McGill University. While her research mainly focuses on Latin American Indigenous cultures, and the role of Indigenous women in sustaining and developing them, she has also been actively involved in raising awareness regarding women’s issues in North America. In 2013, she held a film screening and fundraising event for the film Girl Rising about girls’ access to education around the world, and in 2014 she served as a research consultant and presenter for the Women’s Leadership Conference held by Southern Oregon University.

UI Artist

Marjolaine Allie has vast experience as a video game & interactive user experience artist, working for industry staples like Ubisoft and Electronic Arts. She has spent a year working on the Scrabble brand on mobile which gives her an advantage on usability experience for the genre.

Content Artist

Tony Yang has spent 10 years in the video game industry as a lead artist or artistic director. On Jurassic Park Builder, he took charge of the art content team, establishing the game’s visual identity and managing a host of animators, riggers, texturers & digital painters.

Developer

Blue Lizard Games is an experienced Canadian studio with a successful track record of developing and maintaining game applications. It was founded in Montreal in 2008 by several video games industry veterans and has delivered over 20 games on several platforms. Amongst its clients we can name Disney Interactive, DreamWorks, Infinite Game Publishing, Atari and many more.

Foremost, your reward of course is to encourage a project seeking to raise awareness for an important cause! :)

ALSO! Kickstarter backers get the game before the general public.  We want the feedback of our community before going worldwide!  In particular, we want to make sure we are treating sensitively the topics represented in the story.  That is also why we are subdividing the content into different levels of maturity,  The edgier episodes will refer to issues in sexuality or violence that may not be suitable for all audiences.

The physical rewards will be high quality collectibles featuring the game's iconic art!

24" x 18" poster
24" x 18" poster
5.5" x 8.5" Notebook
5.5" x 8.5" Notebook

The custom character art rewards will be done in a similar style, making it a cool background or Facebook/Twitter/Etc. avatar! Pro tip: it makes a great present for someone else as well!

When considering rewards that will affect the game content, like a new character or naming a location, we will keep in mind the tone and era of the game. We'll also check your comfort level on the role proposed (not everyone is comfortable being a villain or victim), the likeliest scenario being a safe bystander (or a meeting point for a location).

Kickstarter is an incredibly powerful community-building platform.  We want first and foremost as many people as possible to hear about the game, share it and play it!  The more this project gets visibility and distribution, the greater its potential social impact.

Although many of the investments have already been committed by the team, there are still huge investments on quality that will bring the game to the highest standards.  It's no secret that the more appealing the more people will try it and play through it.

The majority of the investment represents programming efforts to create the tools, the meta-game structure & the integration of all the VFX, screens & sounds. If the game is successful, it will make it easier to add additional episodes, reducing significantly the investment in programming per hour of additional content.

Art-wise, some time will be spent on creating VFXes to make the experience more rewarding, but most of the budget represents all the content art (characters, backgrounds, objects).  Also, a few simple UI screens remain (pause, settings, loading, etc.).

The writing process for this project is taken very seriously, as each episode starts with significant academic research.  The writing structure is also significant, not only tying a branching story at the episode level but also at the season level.

Risks and challenges

Independent video game developers can be known for dreaming big and falling very short. This is often due to a lack of experience or an incomplete team skill set.
We have made professional successful mobile games in the past. The production schedule, technical risks and content scope are taken seriously into consideration by experts with the right experience.
Furthermore, the highest risks on the project have already been addressed through the production of the demo. This early build helps prove the intention and confirm the production plan. The core features and game modes are already made, but could use more love.

The biggest risk in terms of human factors is in the critical reception of the project. We'll be touching upon mature subject materials which can solicit very polarized emotional responses.
By basing the story and characters on independent research and letting the player make up their own mind on the issues presented, we hope to avoid the most obvious forms of discrediting and disrespect. Still, the team is aware the project may become unpopular in certain circles, but they feel strongly enough about the mission to go forward! :)
