"I found something out there...in the ice..."
"The Ice Fisherman" is a short film about a troubled war veteran who travels to his Northern Minnesota fishing cabin in the middle of the winter as a way to escape his inner demons. When he discovers a mysterious creature frozen in the lake, he has to decide whether to reveal it and risk being branded as completely insane, or hide it and have the strain of it's existence potentially tear him apart. What follows is a thrilling psychological journey that tests the frayed resolve of this wounded warrior and brings him face to face with his darkest fears.
What was the inspiration of the film?
Growing up in Minnesota, I was always fascinated with the stark landscape of winter. It always felt like you were walking on another planet when you went outside all bundled up, barely exposing any skin to the frozen air. Since moving away, I often find myself haunted by images of this world, and wanted to set a story amongst the snowdrifts. I started thinking about a character that feels alienated in this environment, and the idea of a soldier returning from war popped into my head. As soon as I had this character, he began speaking in a monologue recounting a terrible nightmare he had about the war and set that against the images of him walking through the snow. For some reason, making him an ice fisherman made sense. Like he would need some sort of activity in the winter time that would require him to be away from his family and community.
So what's this creature he finds in the ice?
This is the number one question I get asked from people who have read the script. What exactly is this thing anyway? My answer is, 'I don't really know, but it's definitely scary'. It's unknown to the Ice Fisherman and I also want it to be that way to the audience. As soon as we discover what it is we lose that element of mystery that keeps us interested in the story. Also, there's some question that this thing exits at all to our main character. Perhaps he's just imagining it...
Our amazing designer, Season Mustful, has been hard at work building this creature. Below is an image of one of her designs.
Is your film a comment on war?
I definitely think that by creating a character suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder you can't help but explore this as a theme. Reading about the experiences of soldiers returning from multiple tours of war zones I was struck by the realization of how difficult it must be for these men and women to adjust to normal life after being exposed to such horrible violence. The residue of their experiences doesn't just go away, it's there inside them. I wanted to play on the idea of this dark interior bubbling up to the surface and unleashing itself onto the life of this character and the people surrounding him.
Who's making the Film?
"The Ice Fisherman" is the first film directed by actor/writer Bob Kundrat who has over 15 years experience acting onstage and onscreen. It will be shot on Digital HD on location in Northern Minnesota in the dead of winter with a small, professional film crew.
Where's the Money going?
"The Ice Fisherman" is receiving the generous donations of the talents of the cast, the director of photography, and the amazing special effects/model creator. In addition, the production is getting a grip/lighting package donated as well as several location rentals. That being said, we still need money to pay for a camera package rental, professional crew members to operate our donated/rented equipment, materials to build the creature, food to feed everyone on set, fuel, and prop/costume rentals.
What is the general purpose of the film?
To be submitted to all the major film festivals (Sundance, Tribeca, Slamdance, etc) and some of the smaller ones too.
Thank you for your contributions to make this film a reality!!
