Stretch Goals

Our mailbox is filled with people savvy to the world of Kickstarter asking about a new stretch goal. So here goes:

What is a stretch goal? It sounds like a yoga pose.

A stretch goal means that since we've achieved our goal so quickly, thanks to the outpouring of support from across the globe; we're stretching our goal...

Now that you're officially film financiers, it's time to tell you a little more about how your film will become fully financed. Film financing is a smidgen complicated, but I shall break it down for you:

"Wish I Was Here" is a pretty ambitious indie film. It is larger in scale and scope than "Garden State". It's not a 2 million dollar movie. The budget will be comprised of 3 elements:

  • The money raised here on Kickstarter. (That's you. You rule. I love you.)
  • My own money. (Don't worry. A LOT! An ass-ton.)
  • Pre-selling select foreign distribution rights to a few countries.

The budget for the whole project will ultimately fall somewhere between 4 and 6 million dollars. I know that sounds like a lot of money. (And it is.) But just for some comparison, the studio version of this film would likely fall around 25 million.

Things that are pricey:

  • Fantasy sequences with special effects.
  • A computer generated flying droid. (We could cut him. But I love him.)
  • Shooting at Comic-Con.
  • Shooting with two children (5 and 12). *They are only allowed to work a limited number of hours a day. (Lazy!)
  • An epic soundtrack. (We definitely need some Thom Yorke...)
  • Shooting in Los Angeles. (Several states and Canada offer tax breaks to bring production to them. That's all fine and dandy, but as this film takes place in LA, I'm really campaigning to keep the work here.)
  • Shooting on film instead of video. (OK, I'll likely give this up, but it would be awesome.)

Also, 2 million raised on Kickstarter isn't really 2 million. There are fees to Kickstarter and Amazon, as well as the fulfillment costs of getting you all the delicious goodies we have promised you. (Not to mention how many kitten taints I have to sample to find just the right one for our shirts.)

The point is, now that you've got some skin in the game: the more we raise on here, the better our movie will be. EVERYONE working on this movie is working at the bare minimum the unions will allow.

Zach, get to the point:

Tell everyone you know! Tweet it, Facebook it. Let's keep going. This is your movie as much as it's mine now. The more we raise on here, the more amazing-ness we can afford. We are making history. And I'm so honored by your belief and faith in me.

We will continue to try and offer all the additional incentives you guys are asking for. Please continue to help us make history...

*Also, we are often asked about how to get multiple things. (Like the vinyl and a screening.) This is a sort of glitch in the Kickstarter set-up. The way to do it, is to set up another Kickstarter account. You can still link it to your same Amazon account.

Berlin, Paris, Rome: we hear you. The 3 of us are working frantically to try and bring you an early screening.

Lastly, I wanna share something with you I've never shared with anyone. (No, still not gay...) My hobby is photography. Here's a photo I took of one of my heroes:

"A computer generated flying droid. (We could cut him. But I love him.)". Does he have to be CG? I'm sure he doesn't need to be cut, we just might need to get creative/old school! :)

Please make this happen!!!!!! Would be amazing to have a Thom Yorke song in the soundtrack. Or Radiohead...or Atoms For Peace aha.

I heard you on Howard today and honestly I was captivated by your story about the challenges re: making this movie. Couldn't wait to become a backer. And I'm going to back more than one item for your movie. Just a mom excited about jointing this project. Can't wait to see you in Austin!

    5. Alessandro Schiassi on

Shooting on film is just a waste of money (and time), you can achieve the same quality (and even better in low light conditions) with digital camera, PLUS having real time dailies, constant shooting, smaller cameras, etc.
As for the CG droid give me a shout: I worked on many indie productions as VFX Supervisor and I know how to handle low budgets for amazing visual effects ;)

    6. Matt Chan on

Zach, is there any way you could shoot the flying droid as an old school practical effect? Would that cut back on the CGI cost? I don't mean to assume you haven't thought about this but just in case you hadn't, I think it would look awesome if it was possible to shoot it on a wire and was an actual little droid guy. Whatever you come up with, I'm excited to see and proud to be a backer and fan.

love you zach, i swear you are such a diamond in the rough, there are very few celebs that are real as you are and people see and know that so much. you are just .... wow lol no words to describe the awesomeness that oozes from each little drop of sweat and blood you put into your work. i wish there were more people in the biz like you. <3 (oh an my kitty says hes no kitten but his taint is the softest of them all lol)

    8. Dj Ludowici on

Don't forget the Aussies! Although it is fairly pricey to come down this way.

I don't think it would look any less classy to name an amount for the stretch goal. I can't speak for anyone else, but I know I wouldn't have been offended if you did. We all want this to be the best movie it can be. The goal should be to get what you need to make a better movie than "Garden State".

    27. Brent Baxter on

Your updates are as entertaining as they are informative and quite nice photography, by the way. Best wishes for a lot of stretching...

I'm so excited about this film project and interested in learning how complicated the process can be! It's amazing how a black and white photograph can say so much, yet be speechless.

    35. Michael Askew on

So the stretch goal is "more" and the reward is "better movie"?

    36. rawspork on

I don't know if these comments are actually read or not, but I just wanted to say that if there was a reward level for getting a copy of the finished film on DVD, I would definitely up my pledge. I have currently only pledged $5 just because I believe in supporting films in general outside of the tyrranical studio system. None of the current rewards appeal to me at all, so I just wanted to mention that at least from me, (and I'm guessing a lot of other people) you would get more money towards the project. I've helped produce DVD copies before, so I know they don't actually cost that much on the back end. Anyway, just something to think about! Good Luck with the film!

    37. Bryony Hannah Orr on

Please also consider doing another London screening? (My local and favourite independent in trendy East London: http://www.genesiscinema.co.uk/)

      Hey man, nice picture!

Some thoughts on the pledge :

1/ Why don't you give us a numerical figure? I think it is much easier for everyone to focus on a figure than just the "best they can". It could be in terms of money raised but also in terms of backers; We could start by 3 millions, then move to 4 and so on... Then focus on the numbers of backers as well, the more we are, the more awareness we create about this project. I think that's how the guys in Veronica mars did, and it went well.
2/ About other possible rewards to attract more people, how about a "behind the scene" short documentary? It's always fun to watch. Maybe also stickers for 5-8 $? A pledge for 1$? It is nothing but if it attracts another 60 000 people it will be great.

I'm glad you heard us on some advance film screening in various European cities, i can't wait to book a seat for Paris!

      cheers!

Okay. Points are pouring in. Stretch goals should be clarified, what happens after a particular goal is reached? Shooting on film is still a dream of yours Zach, put it up there and we'll see what we can do about it! Sending backers copies of the movie is a great idea. I think the logical step now is to see what you/we need for the movie, technical stuff, promotional stuff and of course, stuff for the fans. Look into this and come back to us!

    47. Laura Meli on

love B/W portraits :) I also love photography so much. I think you should share some more photos of yours on your FB page, just like your brother Joshua does, he is also an excellent photographer.
