Kidding Around the Kitchen brings FREE “hands on” cooking & nutrition to LA schools. The kids make great food, then they eat it.
IF THEY COOK IT THEY WILL EAT IT
IF YOU FUND IT THEY CAN COOK IT!!
WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR:
Thanks for stopping by our page. With your donation of $1 to $10,000 we will be able to add more FREE cooking classes to public schools throughout the Los Angeles Area. This program is tied to and supports Michelle Obama's Chef's Move to Schools and Let's Move programs fighting childhood obesity. The picture above is an example of what 20 happy 1st grade chefs look like after they learned how to make, cook and eat their own whole-wheat banana pancakes in a Kidding Around the Kitchen cooking class.
WHAT WE DO:
Kidding Around the Kitchen (KATK) brings a “hands on” cooking experience and lesson to the classroom in which the kids actively participate in the preparation of recipes. The result of their cutting, measuring cooking and then eating their creations is more than simply a lesson in health. They get to see, touch, smell and taste the fruits, vegetables, nuts, cheeses, eggs, meats and other ingredients that they may never have previously see in their raw form. The classes reinforce math, science, reading and vocabulary all within a one hour lesson. Measuring cups and spoons help with fractions. Multiplication and division are used when recipes are reduced or increased. Solids become liquids, bread rises, pancakes expand, and science is suddenly edible. Pronouncing ingredient names and reading recipes help to enlarge vocabulary. Studying food labels promotes an awareness of natural and "not so natural" ingredients used in everyday items.
WHY WE DO IT:
At KATK we recognize that children often drive the eating habits of the whole family. By actively involving the kids in the process of preparing a meal, their choices instinctively move to more natural and less processed ingredients. At home, armed with a cookbook from each session, the kids ask to recreate what they’ve learned in class, (often using the same ingredients that only days before were “yuck!”).
HOW WE DO IT:
KATK classes are full of interesting recipes, nutritional facts, and quick kid friendly tips. KATK classes use local and farmers’ market produce when ever possible and if available, produce grown right at school. KATK classes cover a variety of ethnic foods and traditions, nutrition information, food history and fun facts, as well as kitchen safety. KATK has made its own line of kid friendly utensils and knife sets which it uses in it classes. Lisa Fontanesi KATK's creator, has also written and self published a Kidding around the Kitchen family cookbook based on the recipes she has developed for these classes.
HOW WE'LL SPEND IT:
The money raised with Kickstarter will allow KATK to continue to offer this program FREE OF CHARGE to the two Elementary schools that we currently serve, for the remainder of the 2010-2011 school year or longer. ANY AMOUNT OVER $7,000 WILL ALLOW KATK to bring these classes to MORE schools (depending on the amount raised). There has been a great deal of interest in the program expressed by multiple principals ,who are eager for the program to be available at their schools FREE OF CHARGE.
WE ARE ASKING FOR $7,000 BUT WE REALLY WANT TO RAISE $70,000 OR MORE. YOUR DONATION CAN MAKE IT POSSIBLE!!! Please help make this happen for the kids and the schools of Los Angeles County.
Each class costs $150 covering all the food, equipment, cooking teacher’s time, insurance etc.
WHERE AND HOW WE ARE CURRENTLY DOING IT FOR FREE:
Currently KATK is teaching 14 one-hour classes during the school day to supplement the Network for Healthy California Harvest of the month program at both Glenfeliz and Atwater Elementary. These classes are being offered for free of charge thanks to a grant KATK has procured from the Atwater Village neighborhood council (AVNC). Unfortunatly this grant runs out in December 2010.
PS. We love what we do!! Our children are so smart and lovely. They deserve to learn how to feed themselves well. It's our job as adults to prepare children for adulthood. What better way to prepare them then teaching them about real foods and how to make it.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
HELP KATK RAISE EXTRA MONEY
WHERE THE MONEY WILL GO IF WE RAISE EXTRA?
REMEMBER the money raised with Kickstarter will allow KATK to offer cooking classes for FREE to Los Angeles schools. The more money we raise, the more schools, kids and families Kidding Around the Kitchen can work with. Your generosity is going directly to the kids and the healthy food they get to make and eat. KATK is ready to start with Los Angeles schools but we have a whole state and country that could benefit from this type of program. Help KATK get as many kids cooking, learning about where food comes from and eating the foods they make. If they cook it they will eat it!! Please pass this Kickstarter project request on to all your friends who are concerned about our kids and how they eat.
