The Game Room by Black Toad Games is a puzzle adventure that can be played two ways: at your kitchen table with 2-4 friends or all over your house with up to 16 friends. You choose how to play.
Step into the shoes of hot-shot news reporters racing to solve a maze of clues and puzzles in order to earn an exclusive interview with a notorious mad-man! Only the winning team will land the story, so brush up on your favorite board games if you hope to win.
Someone claiming responsibility for a 30 year-old murder has lured reporters to his childhood home with a promise to reward one news team with an exclusive tell-all interview.
Whether you want to play the table-top game or host the live-action puzzle-adventure, the Tear-n-Play version is a great place to start. Sealed cardboard envelopes replace doors and boxes as players use virtual locks to gain access to a mad man’s twisted mystery.
What’s more fun than having a puzzle adventure delivered to your door?
“It was the best surprise ever when the mailman delivered The Game Room to my door. The message on the envelope instructed me to not open without at least 90 minutes available to play and the help of a trusted friend or two. Fortunately it came on a Friday and I was able to get a few friends over that night! We had a ton of fun! Best birthday gift my sister ever gave me!” - Jeremy D.
Hosting a live-action puzzle adventure is a whole new kind of fun! The Game Master Portal makes it simple to set-up and host an incredible game for your friends. Be prepared to be hoisted on their shoulders along with chants of praise when the evening is over.
The standard version of The Game Room requires a space with a kitchen, dining area, an open living area, and two areas separated by a door. The Game Master Guide walks you through selecting which areas of your space to use and includes suggestions for using smaller areas as well as instructions for a one room escape-style set up.
You have two options for every puzzle and clue: download & print, or do-it-yourself using our DIY tutorials. Most puzzles are made up of common board game pieces you’re likely to find around your home or can borrow from a friend. If you have no friends then hosting The Game Room is a great way to get a few.
Whether you enjoy the simplicity of printing your props or the creativity of preparing your own, everything you need to set up The Game Room is included in the Game Master’s Portal.
Ultimately, it’s all about the locks. We love locks and have amassed quite a collection. Since not everyone collects locks, however, we have developed virtual locks and have included them in the Game Master’s Portal as an alternative to costly combination locks. You choose which works best for you.
The Game Master Portal is the closest we could come to letting you inside the mind of our game designer. Through the online portal you have total access to everything you need to host an incredible puzzle adventure:
- a detailed game plan
- an online version of the game where you can play and learn
- printable puzzles
- diy prop tutorials
- virtual locks
- the game master’s guide
- and a place to interact with your fellow Black Toad Game Masters.
- the space
- paper and pencil for each team
- 5 containers (boxes or envelopes)
- wifi if using virtual locks
- combination locks if not using virtual locks
Tear-strip cardboard envelopes replace rooms and boxes as players race the clock to unravel a twisted puzzle. Instructions include table-top and two-team versions of play.
The Tear-n-Play is a great option if you:
- plan to play with 1-5 friends
- want to sample the game before you decide to host
- plan to send the game as a super-cool gift to a puzzle enthusiast
- prefer a more hands on walk-through before hosting the game... (Bonus: contents of the Tear-n-Play can be reused for the host version)
All the puzzles in The Game Room are built using parts from common board games. Still, nearly every test-host has printed at least a portion of the puzzles and clues. The entire print collection amounts to about 20 full pages with some cutting required. The Print Pack includes every puzzle, clue, and QR code professionally printed on quality paper and cut to size. This may be a good option for you if you don’t have access to a printer, prefer minimal preparation, or hate using scissors.
You can call it what you want. All we know for sure is if you can’t get enough of escape rooms and puzzle adventures there’s a good chance you and The Game Room are a match made in puzzle heaven. There are, however, major differences between crowd-pleasing escape games and their clever, geek-club cousin, The Game Room.
“When There is No Opponent It’s Easy to be a Winner” -Lucian (ancient guy known for his wit)
The Game Room is a competitive match against other teams. Teams of 2 - 4 people attempt to out-smart and out-maneuver opposing teams. The real bonus here is trash-talk. Sure, you could take it down a notch and play as a cooperative group. Then at the end you can take turns braiding each other’s hair.
“The Bigger the Better, In Everything” – Freddy Mercury (lead singer of epic rock group Queen)
Rather than searching a single room The Game Room players unlock and search multiple rooms in an attempt to untangle various threads of clues and puzzles. Note: If your heart is committed to a single-room escape format The Game Room can be down-sized to fit your preference. We won’t be offended. We even offer a table-top Tear-n-Play version if you prefer to sit while you play.
“It’s alive!” – Frankenstein (innovative physician in the field of reconstructive surgery)
Purchasing The Game Room is like getting a coloring book; you may prefer the simple black lines or you may decide to bring it to life with your own designs. Many of our game masters are thrilled with the simplicity of using the printed puzzles and virtual locks. Our more adventurous hosts enjoy the creativity of assembling their own props.
“It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.” – A League of Their Own. (the movie which asserted, “There’s no crying in baseball”)
The Game Room is not intended for the faint of heart; not only for players but for the game master as well. Hosting The Game Room is an adventure in itself and offers its hosts the opportunity to create and share an exciting and memorable experience.
How long does it take to set-up and play?
Set-up can take anywhere from an hour to a few days depending on your interest as a game master. Game play for the full multi-room game averages just over 2 hours. The Tear-n-Play takes closer to 1 hour in cooperative mode, depending on the size of the group.
How many people can play?
The live-action version accommodates 6-16 players easily and can be adjusted for more. The Tear-n-Play version is best for 2-5 players.
What age range is best?
Our across the board answer is 12+. Younger players do best on teams with older players who will include them in the problem solving.
I’m trying to decide if I want the Print Pack. What game pieces are used to set up the puzzles?
The Game Room uses pieces from the classic verions of the following games: Monopoloy, Connect 4, Checkers, Scrabble, Clue, Chinese Checkers, and Billiards (yes, technically not a board game). While some game masters choose to print every puzzle and clue, most use some combination of prints and items they have at home.
How many and what kind of combination locks does the game require?
If you decide to use real locks instead of the virtual locks included, you will need 7 combination locks:
- 1 - locker-style combination lock
- 2 - 5-digit ABC & #
- 1 - 4 letter lock
- 1 - locker-style ABC lock
- 1 - 4# lock
- 1 - 3# lock
All but 1 locker-style lock must be re-settable. More detailed descriptions are in the Game Master Portal.
You can also use 6 much less expensive 3-digit locks in combination with the virtual locks if you want to use real locks without the larger expense.

"This isn't for you. You'll hate it. I mean, if you like date nights where you sit in a movie theater not talking to the people you are with. No. With The Game Room you actually have fun, become your own 007 instead of just watching him on the screen and become a competitive problem solving machine with your friends! You'll probably laugh a lot too. Who likes that sort of thing? ;) This was so much fun! Don't miss it!" - Laura T.
Risks and challenges
The only significant potential challenges we see at this point are those of dealing with a print house. This project involves printing a number of different pieces, and having dealt with printers in the past we know that the process doesn't always run smoothly. We have padded our delivery date with a little extra time in anticipation of at least one item requiring a reprint. It is our intention to deliver only high quality prints.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
