Matte Editions is very excited to team up with photographer Michael Marcelle to publish Kokomo, a hardbound photography book that explores the surreal aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The book is not only a deeply personal exploration of trauma in a small town in the Northeast, but also an intense, hallucinatory journey into the very meaning of family and home in the face of unbelievable destruction.
In 2012, the project began to take shape during Michael’s second year in Yale’s MFA program. While making pictures in his hometown in New Jersey, Hurricane Sandy hit, devastating and wreaking havoc on many local towns and communities on the Jersey Shoreline.
By imagining the hurricane tore a literal hole in time and space, Michael's images capture the sense of disorientation left in the wake of this unimaginable destruction. Once-familiar places — his home and surrounding neighborhood — were turned into strange, uncanny inversions of themselves.
The resulting images became Kokomo. Incorporating many different approaches to picture-making, the photographs draw from the aesthetics of 1980s horror films and homemade special effects to conjure an alternate reality layered atop our own.
"Looking at 'Kokomo,' it’s easy to feel that the experience of the hurricane and its aftermath was a means for Marcelle to explore long-standing truths about his family and his home, which he illustrates through his semi-fictionalized photographs." The New Yorker
From the beginning of the project, Kokomo has always meant to exist in book form. Presenting the photographs in a smaller, more intimate scale acts as an accessible entry point to the work and enhances the strange storybook narrative in the images.
With your support, we will create a beautiful hardbound book in an edition of 750-1,000, with a release date of May 2017. Featuring never-before-published photographs from the series, essays by special contributors, and a forward by the artist, this book is the way Kokomo has always been intended to be experienced.
WHERE YOUR FUNDING WILL GO:
$15,000 — Production of 750-1,000 Hardcover Books — The most significant expense we're anticipating is the actual production of the physical books, which will be hardbound, offset printed, with an embossed linen cover in an anticipated edition of 750-1,000.*
$3,000 — Designer and Production Manager Fees, Proofs and Press Check — This will cover the costs of adding a Designer/Production Manager to our team, a crucial step in the process. They will oversee the creation of the books from start to finish, including fulfillment of all rewards etc.
$2,000 — Distribution, Shipping, and Promotion — This includes getting the final books to our studio in Brooklyn from the printing press, and then back out to distributors and book stores in the U.S. and abroad. Additionally, this includes fees for any book fairs and other promotional campaigns next spring.
*Note: Specific design of book subject to change.
I made this work as a way to connect with my family and home after the storm, so I'm excited to continue that sentiment and utilize this campaign as a way to connect to our community. We’re so thrilled to work with our audience to bring this book to life, to make it the most beautiful book it can be — offering rewards that are not only unique, but also a tangible way to engage with a very intense and personal body of work.
Now for the best part! We're incredibly excited to offer these rewards for supporting the production of the book:

MATTE Editions is a photobook publishing imprint founded in 2010 by Matthew Leifheit as a platform for new ideas in photography. It developed out of MATTE Magazine, which seeks to provide a context where emerging and more established artists can benefit from sharing pages, and is specifically interested in (but not limited to) queer issues. Developments in on-demand technology allow each issue to be printed on a rolling basis, in an unlimited edition, in full-color with no ads.
Risks and challenges
We are very excited to release Kokomo in late spring 2017, and completing our funding goal will ensure a prompt release. However, as with any publication, unforeseen circumstances in production could push back the release date slightly.
