Legends of Ska: Welcome to the House of Joy is a documentary film focusing on the sights & sounds of Jamaica during the early 1960s. As the precursor to Reggae, Ska is a mix of Jazz, R&B, and many other styles of music, which continued to make a huge impact far from the island's shores.
Thank you for visiting Round 2 of our crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter. (We had to change the title from the first campaign, so I chose a lyric from King Stitt's jive how everything was "Cool & Copasetic.") Two months ago, we attempted to raise a substantial amount of funding through Kickstarter and fell short of our goal. Since contributions must reach the declared goal or get nothing, we ending up with zero money for all our efforts. However, the initial campaign significantly raised worldwide awareness of the Legends of Ska film. Here was that well received trailer:
Nearly 4,000 people on Facebook clicked the "Like" button after viewing the above trailer and learning about the film. After that amazing show of support and the generous contributions pledged, we were convinced to ramp it up and do it again!
A message from the filmmaker:
The best way for this Kickstarter campaign to be a success is for you, a fan of Ska, Rock Steady and Reggae music, to do the following:
1) Contribute whatever you can financially to the project by clicking the BIG GREEN BUTTON on the top right side of the screen.
2) Tell your friends about the film via email, texting, Facebook, Twitter or the old fashion way by actually speaking to them.
4) Dig out your old Jamaican vinyl, 2Tone records or Third Wave Ska CDs and listen to them again!
This time around, a modest goal of $15,000 has been declared, with the hope that much more will be raised during this 60 day campaign. What would $15K do for the film?
- Allows us to complete a rough cut and work on the sound mix.
- We will continue building momentum and complete the film this year, allowing the film to be released in 2012 during Jamaica's 50th anniversary as an independent nation.
- I thought reuniting the greatest collection of original Jamaican Ska singers & musicians was going to be the hardest part of this process, but it turned out to be the easiest. Raising the money to complete this project through traditional means has not worked out, that is why I am turning to you.
Currently, all principal photography has been completed and the film is in post-production. All the money raised from Kickstarter will go directly towards completing the film. Our priority is to finish editing the film by late summer, then continue promoting the film on the festival circuit. Extra funding will also cover the sound mix, High Definition transfers & MARKETING.
The more money raised, the more songs we can use in the finished film.
How Kickstarter Works
Crowd funding is a unique way for artists, entrepreneurs and creative people to raise funds for worthwhile endeavors. Individuals worldwide have the ability to donate money to projects they appreciate. In return, they receive items in exchange for their generosity. Money received from donors is not legally considered investment, nor is it tax deductible.
How Do I Pledge?
By clicking the BIG GREEN BUTTON on the top right side of the screen that reads BACK THIS PROJECT. You can be anywhere in the world, but must use a major credit card. The whole process takes about 5 minutes.
