My name is Sarah and I'm a ceramic artist. Thank you so much for spending time with my Kickstarter.
This past year I outgrew the cooperative studio where I had been making my pottery. I've been working all summer to find a studio and acquire permits from the city of Berkeley. Now I need to install a kiln and build a workspace.

Why does it matter?
I'd love to be given the chance to continue working in a field I love, in a craft that I have been dedicated to since my teens. I've worked for years to bring the Fermentation Jars as far as I have, and now, in order to continue, I need my own kiln and my own studio.
It's good news! With your support, I'll be able to develop and create more work. Until now, because of time and space constraints I've focused almost exclusively on making Fermentation Jars. So many more possibilities will open with the chance to work in my own space.
The Value of Local Production:
As our world shifts, local production continues to be more relevant. I have worked hard for years to develop my skills and my knowledge and now the opportunities for makers like me are growing. With so many objects made overseas, it is empowering for me as an artist, and for you as the customer, to be able to trade at a local level.
Help me build to my goal of having a studio to work in. Thank you in advance for your pledge to this campaign!

The goal of $30k will fund:
- Kiln transportation and installation
- Adequate shelving and ventilation systems.
- A Glazing Station
- A Slipcasting Station
- Freestanding greywater sink that filters and recycles all water used in the studio
- A shipping station and small office
By contributing to this campaign you will build your personal karma as well as receive Vegetable Fermentation Jars and new, original pieces from bowls to coffee brewing cones. Thank you in advance for your pledge and contribution! I am so grateful.
Any money over the funding goal will be used to start phase 3 of the build out (anything beyond the essentials listed above) and to begin to pay back the initial loans from my friends and family.
A few last (important) words . . .
I couldn't be more pleased with how organically my business has grown and developed. From working by myself and selling online to working closely with my business manager and hiring studio assistants, it has been a really worthwhile challenge. I have grown a lot in the process, and I am so grateful to have this opportunity.
I'm inspired by the power of my small business to grow community, generate fair jobs, and by the way that developing a business can be as creative as making a piece of pottery.
As I grow, I'm committed to continuing to adopt progressive practices and innovating ways to build a smart, handmade design business.
Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is that the build out of the studio will not go as planned. To prepare for that risk, we've been working with an experienced contractor, an architect, and an engineer to fully prepare for the project.
Running a business of any size is risky. Sarah Kersten Handmade has been a functioning, self sustaining, business for almost three years. This fundraising effort has been carefully calculated, and the need to build a studio is urgent.
