A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
UpCart® City simplifies daily tasks by reducing the effort of carrying items on stairs, over curbs and irregular terrain. Our unique multi-wheel design provides for smooth ride on any supporting surfaces and improves stability. Patented technology allows the UpCart City to fold completely flat for easy storage! Lightweight but strong, this folding cart can haul up to 77lbs just about anywhere. Save your back one stair at a time with the UpCart City! FEAR NO STAIR!
The UpCart City is an entirely new design, offered for the first time through this Kickstarter Campaign. Customers asked and we listened... UpCart City is the lightest and most compact cart we have developed. We want to make the UpCart more accessible to people who need it. Please see below for all the great details about this awesome new product.
By using a multi-wheel design, the UpCart® City is able to "walk" over obstacles such as sidewalk curbs, stairs and uneven surfaces. As any wheel encounters an obstacle, the other wheels rotate forward over the obstacle, while the stopped wheel continues to support the load. This approach has several distinct advantages over the traditional single-wheel approach:
It is able to pivot to a different wheel and keep moving where a single wheel cart would get stuck.
UpCart City has two wheels on each side in contact with the ground (total of 4 wheels), with the load centered between them to improve stability and balance.
The multi-wheel design reduces the amount of effort required when moving up and down stairs and irregular terrain.
Tall handle (the tallest handle in its class) minimizes how far you bend your back and assures better posture when pulling a load on stairs.
Our patented folding technology allows us to use a multi-wheel design yet still fold completely flat in seconds, with no disassembly required. Equally, UpCart® City unfolds in seconds fully assembled and ready to go. With the tallest handle in its class, the UpCart city minimizes bending and saves your back. The ability to use a multi-wheel design gives the cart extreme versatility. This isn't just a grocery getter, it's perfect for transporting boxes, laundry, potters, mulch, water softener, dog food, small furniture/appliances, you decide! UpCarts are Up For Anything!
If you have ever struggled to get something heavy or bulky up and down the stairs, but don't have the space for a large dolly, UpCart® City is your solution. The UpCart City is the most compact and portable multipurpose cart. The UpCart City can go virtually anywhere while carrying all your gear, then folds completely flat in seconds to fit easily in your car, on public transportation or in a closet. It's more than just a stair climber, this one small folding cart can be used for multiple purposes all year round. Save your back one stair at a time!
Stretch Goal Announced! - When we hit $25,000, we will unlock the Great Bungee:
The Great Bungee Cord uses an alternative fastening system that replaces the role of the fixed length bungee cord to enable you to adjust it to a suitable length and tension. Simply secure both ends around your cargo and to the frame of the UpCart. Then adjust the length, and tension, of the cord by pulling the end of the cord through the self-locking clip.
This is an awesome accessory to make your UpCart even more useful!
We first tried to launch our company via Kickstarter back in 2014. While our campaign did not fund, we found an angel investor and learned an amazing amount through the process. With the help of our angel investor, we brought our first product, the UpCart® Original, from idea to reality. Since then, we have successfully released the UpCart® Original and a number of additional products. And while we will always have a fond place in our hearts for the UpCart® Original, it is important to us that we listen to our customers.
UpCart® City is a result of feedback from our amazing customers. You spoke, we listened. The UpCart® City has many of the same great features as its bigger brother, but was designed to be the most compact and portable all-terrain stair climber. Weighing in at only 8 lbs, the UpCart® City is several inches narrower to make navigating tight spaces easier. However, the 14-inch platform is strong and can support up to 77lbs on stairs. The wheels are 100% behind the frame, allowing for better balancing of your cargo and for very wide objects (wider than the platform) to be placed on the cart.
Our customers asked for a smaller, lighter, less expensive sibling to the UpCart® Original for lighter-duty daily use. We are extremely proud to be able to offer the UpCart® City.
TriFold was co-founded by two very unlikely business partners. Leonid Khodor, the inventor, is an engineer and patent agent who is a long-time friend of the family of Michael Reznik, a Management and Operational Excellence consultant. The two connected at Michael’s father’s birthday party and aligned on a vision for changing the future of mobility.
The UpCart® line was officially launched at the 2015 NHRA National Hardware Show to remarkable success. The UpCart® was awarded the “Most Innovative Concept” award at the show. Michael was invited to pitch a panel of buyers from QVC. The UpCart was selected to be featured live on QVC. The UpCart sold out within 5 min of being on-air.
The UpCart has continued to grow in popularity ever since. In addition to going viral on Facebook in Late 2015, the UpCart returned to the NHRA National Hardware show in 2016 to win the “Retailer’s Choice” award. The UpCart Original continues to sell well through a variety of channels and is now available in 15 countries.
Risks and challenges
HOW FAR WE HAVE COME: We are still a small family business with a commitment to helping improve mobility and independence for our customers. However, since our first Kickstarter campaign back in 2014 and our first product launch in 2015, we have learned a great deal about the manufacturing process, fulfilling orders and customer service. We are extremely proud to say we have a proven track record of meeting our commitments and delivering awesome products to our customers.
With that said, developing a new product is extremely challenging, risks always exist and delays are possible...
MANUFACTURING: Creating the tooling to manufacture a product like this is expensive and requires expert knowledge to get it right. There is typically a 60-day lead time to create the molds and fixtures for a product of this size, and this is where delays could occur. To minimize that possibility, we're working with manufacturers with a track record for prompt quality.
PRODUCT ADJUSTMENTS: As the UpCart City gets ready for production, there will likely be some minor adjustments to improve the final product. Pre-production prototypes are made to test and refine the product. They also allow us to incorporate our adjustments and those suggested by manufacturing partners and independent product testers. These will always be for the benefit of you, the consumer, and we will let you know exactly how and why any are made.
FULFILLMENT: Sometimes things go awry that can’t be planned for: a supplier misses a deadline, a machine breaks down, or a shipment gets lost. Those things could cause a delay. You have our commitment that we will do everything in our power to hit our timeline.
We are working with manufacturers who have years of experience delivering folding hand carts in tremendous quantities. There will no doubt be some surprises along the road, but we have excellent partners with decades of experience sourcing similar products. Any obstacle will be addressed by combining our internal knowledge with advice and expertise from our partners and advisors. You have our commitment that all decisions will be made with protecting your interest as the primary goal.
Any pledge amount brings us one step closer to our goal. Help us make the UpCart City a reality by clicking the 'Back This Project' at the top of the page, or by sharing our page to help spread the word.
