Alyssa’s Puzzle Project

Alyssa Presenting Project
Alyssa Presenting Project

Alyssa’s Puzzle Project is a fun program that enables children to be heard in the fight against abuse and corruption, while educating them to use simple creative efforts to help spread the word about a pressing concern and let them know they can make a change.Turn on any channel and you will see story after story about police brutality, government corruption, the erosion of our rights as Americans, and let’s not leave out domestic abuse, drug abuse, the prison industrial complex and the economy founded on it.Our children go to school every day and no longer learn about civics or human and civil rights (other than in a general sense). They are labored by all of these issues while being helpless to do anything about it as their parents ensure their futures are completely screwed up because of complacency, fear of retribution, and inaction to positively make a stand and address these issues in a productive manner.

Alyssa is the daughter of the Founder of CAAPS – Citizens Against Abusive Power Systems. She was appointed to sit on the CAAPS Board of Directors as the Children’s and Animal Rights Affairs Director by her father in an effort to help her establish a good will attitude toward helping people, and to show her that things can be done. He tasked her with coming up with an idea to raise funds for the organization’s fight against abuse and corruption. He further instructed her, that the idea should be fun, educational, and needs to spread awareness, not only that there are issues that need to be resolved, but that everybody can do their part to help make things better for everyone, while letting the adults of the world know that they need to get their act together.

Alyssa came up with the idea of putting puzzles together. It is something that most children enjoy doing and it is often used by mental and occupational health professionals as an exercise to learn and practice a multitude of skills such as visual perception and analysis, fine motor control, project completion, and patience. They are also used to just slip away into another world while your mind subconsciously contemplates the problems of the day. They are fun, and can be done quietly, alone, or with groups of people working together to accomplish a single goal.

It is Alyssa’s goal to mold this simple act of artistic therapeutic learning and skill building into a program that sends a message around the world, and raises funds for the organizations that help fight abuse and corruption.

The Message

The message is twofold.

1.That in order for the world to be rid of abuse and corruption ALL OF THE PIECES HAVE TO FIT TOGETHER, and;

2.Alyssa specifically leaves one piece of the puzzle out to signify remembrance of  the person that was unable to be helped.

The Project

The schools implement the project into classes related to public policy, abuse, corruption, civil protest, human rights, civil rights, probably at the end of the instructional period. The children can then pick puzzles as teams or individually to assemble in class. They assemble the puzzles and choose one piece to leave out. Then the puzzles are glued and turned over to us. We, at CAAPS, then mat and frame the puzzles, and then hold an auction at a gallery or other fundraising event, e-bay, or our website to raise funds for the fight against abuse and corruption.

We will provide the puzzles, glue, matting, and framing and all the necessary work involved with bringing the finished puzzles to market.

Alternatively, if the schools do not have a program, CAAPS will also accept donations of assembled, matted, framed and signed puzzles from children that assemble the puzzles at home and would like to contribute to the project for recognition and rewards.

Each puzzle will have a special serialized number that the CAAPS organization maintains record of, and a certificate of authentication that will contain that number and accompany the picture.

The monetary value of the puzzles and this project will be ultimately determined by the public at large once the puzzles start to sell. The organization may limit the amount of puzzles released under the program to preserve value, if the puzzles sell for very high prices. The determining factor will be the first auctions or events held to raise funds.  However, the actual value of the puzzle is priceless. It is the message that it is sending and the people that are sending it; the children that take the effort to be heard and make change.

What You Are Funding

You are funding the creation of this program. Alyssa was told that her idea is great but needed to be funded, and she is following these efforts all the way through and monitoring this campaign closely.Money is needed for puzzles, and related supplies, framing, glue …etc. But additionally, there are some other fees associated with getting school districts to promote the project, and having teachers and schools participate in the probably once a year event, not to mention advertising literature, securing of a location for either an art gallery expose', or auction house. And, of course, we can’t forget some type of reward for the children that participate in the events.

The children assembling the puzzles receive awareness of a problem and a means to express their stand to solve the problem. They also receive recognition for their stance as every puzzle will be signed and credited to the child(ren) that assembed the puzzle. If the event in which the puzzles are sold is public as opposed to online, the children will be invited to attend the event where they will meet people interested in their work, and see first hand how their work can be used to be heard and create money to make a difference in society. In addtion, the schools will be provided with a listing of the money generated by their efforts.

Finally, an award system will be implemented for the children and schools that participated. On the school level, perhaps art supplies or some type of additional educational funding. For the children, a pizza party or t-shirts, or some gift of nominal but appreciative symbolic value. Depending on funding we will also create more elaborate gifts as awards on an individual level for bringing in the most money and/or artistic creativity, most compelling message ... etc. If this program is really successful then the gifts can include grant awards or scholarships for children wanting to enter into public service, the legal profession, or human interest work.

In order to kick this event off and try to ensure funding we have set the funding request at $50,000 which would be enough to launch in the local area of CAAPS (the Philadelphia Suburbs), however the more money we receive to launch the project, the bigger, or better success rate we will have. At this point, at the local level, we are seeking to schedule time in a gallery and get three schools involved in the project. If we tremendously exceed our funding goal for the kick off of this project, we could actually look more towards national launch, and maybe rent a larger convention center for the event and have schools and children from all across the country contribute, which is our ultimate objective.

Risks and challenges

Most of the challenges and risks come as the project gets larger, and then the limitations of the project would only be curtailed by the funding.

Most of the obstacles with this program involve operational logistics and funding mechanisms. Those problems depend greatly on the exposure of the program and the ability to strike a balance between preserving financial value of the project as an art, offering limited supply at high dollar amounts, or flooding the market to obtain maximum exposure of the message. The market and public support will ultimately determine the scope of this project. According to the U.S. Department of Education, National Association for Education Statistics, in 2010-2011, there were 98,817 public schools in the U.S. Those schools serve a population of roughly 300 million citizens.

The CAAPS leadership and Board of Directors has over 60 years of business experience, with specific interests in problem solving abilities. We have a strong and growing following with contacts in 7 states and 5 countries (so far) that are interested in helping CAAPS expand into those areas, not to mention a large array of college student volunteers that keep our information on trends and business practices fresh and up to the minute relevant. We will obviously need more in order to support a national campaign, however everyday awareness spreads and we make new contacts that are interested. A national program at this point could be difficult for us to maintain at each individual locality, however money makes the world go round. We have the experience, and can easily maintain a local program, as well as run a national program from our local area provided we have the funds to do so.
