40 Imaginations. 40 Robes. 1 Guild.
In keeping classical music exciting and current, we aim to unite the music from video games and film scores with our epic classical favorites that can compliment the style at an elite level. While a lot of us didn't find standard classical music to be accessible growing up, we found film scores and game soundtracks to be a good middle ground to introduce us to the music we fell in love with as we got a little older. Our goal is to show a similar audience the music that inspired media composers of today and help them fall in love with pieces that they didn't even know they were missing. We will also invite other stellar local ensembles to be featured on our concerts to not only show what our city has to offer, but also to bring together different generations in our audience. We hope to see young gaming/anime fans to be conversing with older Bach fanatics at our concerts.
FOLKLORE is dedicated to providing a music education to performing artists and concert goers alike. We are a diverse ensemble including professional classical musicians, indie band singers, R&B artists, music majors in college, and auditioned high school singers. With our guild system, we have created an apprenticeship program to provide up and coming musicians an opportunity to rehearse and perform with artists that can help influence and expand their potential. Through osmosis, mentors will learn just as much from the students as the they give advice on vocal technique, networking, and section leading.
We need your help to start our Mission!
Monk robes are a tribute to our roots in Gregorian chant. They also provide us with a medium between us and our audience to help us enter a unique fantasy realm. These robes add a visual aspect to our performance, what is often missing in classical music. Each section is assigned their own color, giving us a wide variety of formations to experiment with and keeps us away from the standard "concert black". These robes are from www.museumreplicas.com and are made of a thick, burlap type of material that will last for the years of wear to come.
True to the troubadour fashion, we will bring music to the people in unique acoustic friendly spaces like train stations, art museums, and local cathedrals- starting at St. Andrew's by the Sea in Pacific Beach on August 2nd, 2014. We will be featured at the San Diego Summer Choral Festival for our debut performance and we want to show how our hard work has paid off through a refined audible and visual performance. The voices and venue have been set in place; now the robes can allow us to fill in the remaining pieces of the puzzle.
Currently, Folklore is a vocal ensemble but as we progress we will soon add an orchestral component built on the same principle of an apprenticed community.

Risks and challenges
As with any fundraising project, comes obstacles. Our staff and directors are all in our mid-20's, attempting to start a new organization with ambitious goals. If for whatever reason there is a problem with the shipment of the robes, then we will find another creative last minute attire for our debut concert on August 2nd. When the robe problem gets fixed (if one arises) we will debut the robes at a later date and invite all of the contributors out for a postponed group photoshoot in the robes that they sponsored.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
