About this project
Update: We're funded!!! Check out the stretch goals:
✓✓✓ $18,500: I'll be able to hire a professional editor! Hello Web Design has so much complex writing that gives a fabulous editor an opportunity to turn the book into an even bigger joy to read.
$21,000: I'll be able to hire a professional cover designer! Hello Web App was designed by yours truly, and it's pretty great, I'd love to be able to hire someone who specializes in covers to save me time in producing the book (not to mention get an awesome cover new design).
$25,000: Design teardowns additional content! A bit part of the design process is critically analyzing designs (yours and others) — I'll created a PDF with 10 design teardowns to walk you through my process and help you learn.
If you work on the web, even if you're not employed as a "designer," you'll still need to do some web design at some point.
Whether it's designing your personal website, a landing page for your new app or open-source project, a form for your company, your resume, or something else — you should know the basics of design.
The field of design is huge and most introductory web design books and resources assume that you'll become a full-fledged designer and go into long and complicated detail about all aspects of web design and theory.
What if you just need to learn enough to compliment your existing web work?
Hello Web Design covers the basics and shortcuts of web design — cutting out theory and focusing on accessible and easy-to-learn principles to help you feel more comfortable doing design.
Topics covered include:
- Visual web design and cutting down on clutter.
- Design principles (like color and layout) and shortcuts you can use.
- Writing and perfecting content.
- User experience and what it means.
- Training your design eye.
- Best web resources for learning more.
Hello Web Design leans on common website patterns as examples, but everything you'll learn will apply to other kinds of design too.
The material covered in Hello Web Design has been presented at conferences worldwide, including a keynote at O'Reilly's Fluent Conference as well as sessions at PyCon 2016, GitHub's CodeConf LA, Mozilla's View Source Conference, and Amazon's WebDevCon.
Tracy Osborn has successfully Kickstarted, designed, and self-published two Hello Web App books teaching web app development for designers and non-programmers. These two books will give you a sense of the quality that Hello Web Design will have.

Risks and challenges
While I've successfully self-published two other books, Hello Web Design is going to be a unique challenge as it involves visuals rather than just code snippets and screenshots, so it adds the additional challenge of producing great quality illustrations to match the content of the book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
