About this project
Nightcallers is an offbeat, CG animated action-adventure tale of the Mansects, a race of half-human, half-insect hybrids who were created in a desperate, misguided experiment on Earth, and then were exiled to a planet of their own, Arthropoda, where they were happy and prosperous, thanks to the Bugbots, the giant, insect-shaped machines they build to do all the work.
Then one day, the machines become infected with a mysterious computer virus that they call Beetlemania. It causes the machines to go berserk, slaughtering Mansects by the dozens and hundreds, and threatens their very society and all that they've built.
Skarab, our hero, is the Chief Bugbot Inspector and it is his job to locate and neutralize the virus. But his nemesis (and former best friend), the Exalted Grandragonfly, has decided to confiscate all the Bugbots, claiming it is a safety move, and gives Skarab 48 hours to find the virus. But now Skarab doesn't have a single machine to examine!
Skarab and Midge Lacewing are forced to infiltrate the Weevil Hive, steal a Jetwasp right from under Biff's nose, and escape without getting killed!
Work-in-progress render of the opening scene of "Nightcallers"
This is still a rough cut; the ending scene will be fleshed out considerably, dialog shots added, and animation throughout will be cleaned up.
MY SUPER-TALENTED SUPPORT TEAM!
Scott Brubaker has played French Horn for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra since 1973. He has also developed a notable career as a soloist chamber musician and recording artist, and has played concerts around the world. Scott will be creating a lush musical track for "NIghtcallers" using existing public domain works.
Camille Mazurek hasappeared on stage in dozens of New York theatre productions, as well as numerous TV commercials and videos for The Onion. She is also a dialect and vocal coach and teacher.
John Mazurek has appeared in numerous TV shows from "Law & Order" to Adult Swim, over 20 TV commercials, and videos for The Onion. He has appeared on stage in New York and many regional theatre productions.
Nightcallers began as a comic book project back in the 90's, then was a web comic from '96 to '99. We tried without success to attract the attention of animation studios and then put the project aside for awhile. I completed my Flash animation Sister Mary Dracula, expanded the story into a graphic novel, and created an animated music video for Singapore-based jazz musician Shawn Letts, all the while working on Nightcallers and working a full-time job.
My current plan, and the reason I'm here at Kickstarter, is to complete the first scene from the story to use in pitching the project to movie and animation studios, and also to enter it in film festivals where TV programming scouts often look for new content.
The story itself is thoroughly mapped out, with some great, nail-biting action sequences, plot twists and turns, and life-or-death cliffhangers.
Here are the two designs that will be used for both the postcard and poster rewards. Yes, these are the posters behind me in the video!
EXCEEDING MY TARGET
If I should be lucky enough to exceed my target amount of $9,000 by a sufficient amount, I'll be adding one final shot where we meet Colfax, the lone human character in the story. He's one of the Earth traders who fly the wormholes to trade with Arthropoda. He and Skarab are best friends, and when the Bugbots are struck by the computer virus, all the other Earth traders bug out, but Colfax is trapped on Arthropoda when his ship has mechanical problems. (Hmm, could his ship's problems have something to do with the computer virus?) In the course of the story, Colfax becomes a pawn in the power play between Biff and Skarab!
And if I should exceed my target by an enormous amount, I'll add the whole next scene, a dramatic Jetwasp chase where Skarab tries to shake the dozen or so Enslaver Ants who are in hot pursuit! I've already started mapping out this scene but completing it will take a lot more music, special effects and voice work. There will also be opportunities for more Enslaver Ant death screams!
I would love an opportunity to complete these extra elements!
