FRENZY - An Illustrated Novel
A new illustrated novel of oceanic terror written by author Andrew E.C. Gaska about one of the world's most beloved animals... sharks!
In the early 1970s, off the North Eastern seaboard of the United States, an army amasses. This army doesn’t use guns, or bombs, or even knives. Instead its weapons are speed, stealth, size, and rows of flesh-tearing teeth. They gather each year at the same location to eat and mate, then break up again to traverse the oceans until the next cycle.
This army poses no danger to those who stay out of its way. They make no organized attacks, lead no incursions into new territories… That is, unless they have leaders.
Now, they have three.
As a group or researchers, wealthy teenagers, and Vietnam veterans make their way up the coast, the army of great white sharks gathers to feed on seals. The sharks, however, soon find themselves besieged by ruthless predators. As the sharks attempt to flee, three of their kind; bigger, deadlier, and more cunning than the rest, rise to the occasion, whipping this pack of great whites into a feeding…
Frenzy is an original illustrated horror/thriller novel about one of the world’s most beloved animals... sharks! It is an original novel authored by Andrew E.C. Gaska (Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes, SPACE: 1999 Aftershock and Awe, Critical Millennium) , and will be produced by guerrilla design studio BLAM! Ventures, LLC. Frenzy is a special project because while it is a prose novel (not a graphic novel), the book will have over 20 paintings and another 20 pen & ink illustrations from a diverse array of talented artists to help tell the story. These talents include AMAZING artists such as menton3, Bob Eggleton, Dave Dorman, Erik Gist, Steve White, Aaron Miller, Dan Dussault, Chandra Free, and J.K. Woodward!
Don't know them all by name? Take a look at some of their previous work below, and check out the talent we have to offer!
To find out more about these artists, check out their bios at the end of of this page!
This book will give both shark fanatics and comic fans (and everyone in between) something beautiful, grisly, and exciting to sink their teeth into!

Ventures’ own Katie Delz and Ella Laytham! Fans of these gorgeous ladies will be able to buy a book full of paintings with these women in retro 1970s style, painted by the likes of Dave Dorman, menton3, and the other artists mentioned above!

This book is going to be designed in a style similar to that of 1970's pulp magazines and comics. BLAM! Ventures has previously put out two Space: 1999 graphic novels, and we are currently working on a Buck Rogers in the 25th century illustrated novel series. The book we've published so far that is most like what FRENZY will be in appearance and format is our Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes illustrated novel.
What's the money for?
You’re helping us fund costs for the production side of the book. That includes design, illustration, editing, printing (of the softcover b&w edition), and shipping. As we are developing this without a specific publisher, the cost of the artists and design falls on us, and can get pricey! The advantage of developing the entire package without a publisher signed on is that we will retain full rights to the book, and the story can be as gruesome and interesting as we want!
We're going to be making a downloadable digital edition of the book, and also a limited edition *KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE* black and white printed version, which are both available at the THE LONE BATHER level ($25). THe option to get a full color softcover version of the book instead of the black & white one is available at the SEA LION ($50) level and above.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE SURPASS OUR GOAL?
If we hit our stretch goal of $55,000 we’ll be able to print a hardcover edition of the book with full color paintings! Additionally, the hardcover edition of the book will receive a new cover from a top talent in the industry (to be decided later). The hardcover will then go out to everyone who contributed at the SEA LION level ($50) or above!
ALSO, If we reach our stretch goal, those who purchased the audio book will receive an UNABRIDGED version of the book, voiced by James Urbaniak!
We have some very special rewards available! You could become a character in the book, featured in the text and in illustrations! Don't you want to be immortalized in book form, with your limbs hanging out the mouth of a giant Great White? Obviously! We have some great artist packages with limited edition prints, original art and paintings, and a shark diving package with creator and BLAM! head honcho Andrew E.C. Gaska.
Check out all the awesome reward packages we have for FRENZY at the top right of this page!

Kit Quinn began cosplaying in 2007, her first costumes being Snow White, Sailor Mars, and the Chesire Cat. These days she’s more known for her appearances as Harley Quinn, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, and Superma’am. Born and raised in Northern California, Kit later made the journey to Los Angeles to study theater and film at USC. Kit has also performed in various voice acting projects, has served as a makeup artist on a few independent film sets, and currently models regularly for the line Damefatale. In 2012 she, along with best friend Tallest Silver, was named as LA Weekly’s People of the Year and her web series Sweethearts of the Galaxy is about make its internet debut!
When she’s not observing ant behaviors or restoring oyster reefs on the east coast, Joanie Mars is making costumes and cosplaying. Starting in 2003, Joanie started costuming as Princess Leia and Aerith Gansbourgh. Since then, she’s become known for her various Venture Brothers costumes -- such as Dr. Girlfriend, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, and Molotov Cocktease -- and also LeeLoo Dallas from The Fifth Element. With a hardy love of science fiction, fantasy, animation, and video games, Joanie is always thinking of new costumes to make.
While performing her duties as BLAM! Ventures production assistant, Katie Delz is also an avid fan of animation, science fiction, horror and music. Especially when those four are combined.
Lend your ear to the wind, if you can hear small slivers of contempt echoing off of any of those subjects, the Delz shouldn’t be too far. She can often be found balancing books about bygone eras of music, poetry, and filthy cinema while also attempting to not spill her cup of coffee.
In addition to acting as BLAM! Ventures lead designer on FRENZY, Ella is an all around shark and marine biology enthusiast. She hopes to someday come in contact with a great white shark (not fatally), and has seen almost every cheesy shark movie. She carries the plastic shark from the kickstarter video with her everywhere she goes. Really. She has a BFA in graphic design from the School of Visual Arts and only imagined credentials pertaining to sharks.
Derek began acting at the age of 5 and started martial arts training by the age of 7. He has performed in Human Combat Chess matches since his late teens and has appeared in many Renaissance Festivals, Medieval Faires, and Pirate Shows. He has studied period fencing and performed and choreographed fights. He served in the United States Marine Corps and has worked as a Law Enforcement Officer. Derek's combination of over 20 years of fight choreography experience, coupled with extensive weapons training, martial arts, military experience, as well as law enforcement experience bring a background which is difficult to achieve and of which he finds himself extremely fortunate to have accomplished.
As a big fan of adventures and with scars to prove it, Anna enjoys everything that keeps her restless self busy-- including being eaten by sharks. Born in a Commie land far-far away, she came to the states to pursue her dreams of becoming an artist, and now enjoys making everything from experimental art and paintings to down-to-earth interactive design. Never forgetting her love for travel, she is always on some sort of adventure, going to Istanbul or Switzerland, to keep her heart happy.
Rocking a cool ass fro, Xavier Baldwin is a jersey kid attending the School of Visual Arts for Graphic Design in New York City. Pursuing a career in motion graphics, he spends most of his days interning at MTV, or just playing video games. Some of his favorite animals consist of underwater life like octopuses, angler fish, and, of course, sharks; especially bull sharks.
MARINE SCIENCE ADVISORS
From a young age, Kalyn Johnson has been fascinated by the ocean and the creatures in it. This led her to a degree in biology at Duke, specializing in marine biology. During that time she spent 6 months in the field at the Duke Marine Lab studying marine life and following around pods of dolphins. She now works as a lawyer in Washington DC with a focus on environmental protection.
In addition to her cosplay antics and appearing as one of our sharkbait models in FRENZY, Joanie has a Bachelors degree in Biology, with a focus in Marine Biology, Tropical Marine Biology, and Marine Conservation. She’s been a teaching assistant for Mycology, did study abroad in Roatán Honduras for Tropical Marine Biology, and has over 300 hours of marine conservation volunteer work. She has participated in service learning projects where she’s talked about marine biology and science to preschool to middle school kids. Joanie is currently working at UCF King’s ant research lab in Florida.

Risks and challenges
There are risks in producing any creative endeavor, and the challenges inherent in creating an illustrated prose novel of this magnitude are no different.
BLAM! Ventures, and author/creative director Andrew E. C. Gaska have experience coordinating a diverse array of artists for projects such as these. ‘Drew’ and BLAM! have been responsible for the production and release of one illustrated novel (Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes) and three graphic novel events (Critical Millennium: The Dark Frontier, SPACE:1999 - Aftershock and Awe, and CLASSIC SPACE:1999 - To Everything That Was) in the past three years, and have two more illustrated prose novels in production right now for release in 2014-2015 (Death of the Planet of the Apes, and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Killer).
The number one delay in such a book comes in juggling the availability of artists to meet the deadline of the project. That is why we have allocated an entire year to complete the book, making it available for late summer 2014. In addition, the artists chosen for the project have a reliable history and/or relationship with the production team, and are extremely excited about... sharks!
The only "delay" that we do expect is if we meet our stretch goal and are printing full color, hardcover books as well as the regular goal incentive versions of the book. The stretch goal rewards would have to be released later than 1 year as printing overseas and shipping takes additional time, but this would not affect the timing of the standard goals (The digital edition of the book and the black and white limited edition paperback).
We will be updating our backers on a regular basis to keep them in the loop. If we do run into delays, we will make sure that everyone is aware of them, but we are confident that we have allocated enough time in this project to see it come to fruition as planned!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
