About this project
When you can't fight fiction with fact, what's left?
A family drama that's wrapped up in a conspiracy and it doesn't even know it yet.
Two stories separated by place on a course to collide with one and other. Our fated characters, ignorant of the day’s impending doom, will soon discover that what fiction can hide from fact, might not be enough to hide from itself.
Our story begins on a train and in a house: on the train a young man sits by himself staring out the window where he sees in the reflection a little boy across from him reading a children’s book - and he’s propelled back to a night, months ago, where he shot a child in the head (an accident during a routine operation); in the house an old man has sealed himself inside in preparation for his final act in life, his own suicide.
Sometimes plans are best, when they're made to not go accordingly!
Help us complete this first film Homesick and launch Needle and Thread Pictures as a fully-fledged film production company dedicated to producing quality, thoughtful pictures.
Homesick is a film that explores the notion of history as fact and investigates the roles we play in shaping the world through our interpretation. It is a moving journey through image and sound and every cinematic tool at our disposal that tells a story reflecting on themes of memory, belief, trauma, and representation. We have worked tirelessly to create a film that is powerful and dramatic - an immersive experience styled with realism. We want to tell a story that inspires the conspiracy theorist in all of us. And we can't wait to share it with you!
Who We Are
Needle & Thread Pictures was founded by Alain Nouvel in June 2013 when he completed writing the screenplay for Homesick. He came to the conclusion that, in order to move forward and make this film in the manner in which it deserves, he had to form a production company. It took over a year of experimenting, writing, and rewriting, for him to emerge with Homesick – a project we are thrilled to call our launch piece.
Needle & Thread is based on the idea that it's the little details that matter most when looking at the big picture. We want to be the kind of production company that attracts emerging video artists and filmmakers with projects that allow them to express their love for creating beautiful things while challenging them to take risks and explore controversial subjects - people who are inspired by stories similar to Homesick. We want to bring a new voice into the world of cinema, one that welcomes original ideas and thrives on taking risks with brave and ambitious young artists. We hope that Homesick is the seed of an exciting and successful future!
How Far We've Come
After over a year of trying and testing different narrative techniques in writing, figuring out how to make a film that is both groundbreaking and classical at the same time, we arrived at Homesick. A film that not only challenges contemporary storytelling but also draws on a wealth of cinematic history and knowledge in a realistic and engaging way. It is going to be a film that is more than just thought provoking and challenging but entertaining as well. We are ready to bring this film to life and we hope you'll join us on the way!
So far, we've been able to get some financing and begin casting but all with very limited means and resources: in Alain's apartment and with the generosity of a number of volunteers. It has been a difficult process but we have emerged with better and more well suited tools to help us complete a compelling and worthwhile film. We've come a long way but now that we've arrived at the final stages of this trying journey we need to ask you for your help in making it all come together.
Where We Want to Go
We want to make Homesick as beautiful as it can be and allow the story to remain true, so that you, the spectator, will be able to see a film as it was originally intended. This film could be the foundation for many future projects. Projects that shall strive to pursue inventive and dramatic stories, with stunning cinematography, unconventional heroes, and meaningful and socially conscious themes.
With our revised budget where we have made an effort to eliminate every cost that is not absolutely essential to the completion of this film. Unfortunately filmmaking is often an expensive process that involves a diverse set of faculties from a multitude of sources. In order to complete this film in a professional and artistic way that provides the most immersive experience possible, we have come to the conclusion that certain costs are unavoidable. These expenses add up very quickly and your help would be instrumental in getting us through to the end, not only with initial production costs but also with post-production and certain distribution fees as well. Your kind contribution will go towards:
- Production Equipment: Camera rental, Lighting equipment, props and costumes.
- Production Logistics: Insurance, Locations, Vehicle
- Cast: 3 Principal Actors.
- Crew: Cinematographer, Sound Mixer, Grip, Production Manager, Make-up Artist.
- Post-production: Original Score, Color Correction.
- a percentage also goes to Kickstarter and Amazon for making this fundraising possible!
Risks and challenges
The art of filmmaking is an ongoing experimentation. With every film and story come unique challenges. Making a film can be costly but ultimately the costs help us deliver the most beautiful results possible.
Though we are a tiny company trying to do something on a very grand scale and at a very professional level, we are committed to making every project work, even if it takes a little more time or some very creative solutions. Your contribution to this Kickstarter project will only make it easier and more efficient. We will definitely keep our Kickstarter supporters informed of any delays we may have to work through. We've had many failures to learn from but even more successes and we've come way too far to not cross the finish line!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
