Two Boston choreographers present "An Tírdhreach Beo" {The Living Landscape} — Ireland's seasonal festivals in Irish and Modern Dance

Hello, and thanks for checking out our project! We — choreographers Kieran Jordan and Karen Murphy-Fitch — met in 1997, when Karen’s company, Falling Flight Project, presented its first Irish-themed, modern dance show, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Since then, we have followed and admired each other’s work over the years, and have consulted with each other several times on Irish music, history, and dance ideas. Now our two companies will unite in a collaborative dance performance called An Tírdhreach Beo, which is Irish for “The Living Landscape.”

With original choreography that we have been developing with our dancers for the last 18 months, The Living Landscape lets us imagine and interpret Ireland’s four pre-Christian seasonal holidays — Lughnasadh, Samhain, Imbolc, and Beltaine — through the physicality and creative expression of Irish and modern dance.

The traditions of these four festivals have been respected and honored in Irish culture for thousands of years. People have looked to the folklore of these festivals for historical education, solace, community ritual, entertainment, as well as explanations for the natural world, and glimpses into the otherworld.

With a cast of 13 amazing dancers, we’re planning to perform our new work on June 7th and 8th at the Boston University Dance Theater. Our creative team also includes lighting design by Jayne Murphy, original set design by Vincent Crotty, and live music for many parts of the show, by New York based musician and composer Cleek Schrey.

This is an ambitious undertaking, and so we are asking for your help! We’re trying to raise about 50% of our necessary funds through Kickstarter. Your donations will go directly to our production costs to make this show possible! Any amount will help, and is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Special thanks to our devoted dancers! Falling Flight Project — Brianna Bailey, Jason Dionne, Alison Fox, Maggie Husak, Meghan McLyman, Caitlin Meehan, Leanne Sera Jose, and Kieran Jordan Dancers — Kelley O'Carroll, Jaclyn O'Riley, Hannah Pelton, Jennifer Schoonover

And a big huge thank you to Andy Bell for creating this video! Music in this video includes hardanger fiddle playing by Cleek Schrey, and a recorded selection by the group Triptych (Laura Risk, Kieran Jordan, Paddy League). Our poster image is an original painting by Vincent Crotty, with graphic design by Brandon Fitch. Thank you!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

One of the greatest challenges of this project has been, simply, scheduling rehearsal time together. Our 13 dancers are busy Bostonians. Several are mothers of young children. One is a full-time worker with City Year. One is a midwife with overnight shifts. Two are touring step-dancers, with unpredictable travel schedules. One even finished her PhD during the span of our work on this project. We manage to get a lot done in short rehearsals each week, with each company meeting separately. Full group rehearsals — with both companies dancing together — happen about once every four weeks. This is precious and productive time, when we can see the results of our ideas/emails/planning, and the collaborative energy takes over.

Another challenge has been working with two very different dance vocabularies, between the Irish dance and modern dance companies. We have talented, adventurous artists in this project, and yet, everyone feels vulnerable when trying something new — Irish dancers arching and rounding their vertical spines, or softening into partnering lifts, and modern dancers hopping, and hopping, and hopping, on the balls of their feet. Plus, we have different clothing and flooring needs. We hear Irish music differently, and argue about the counts. Sometimes we break through our habits, stretch ourselves, and dance gloriously in unison. Other times, we just allow our differences to exist side by side, taking delight in the quirky and surprising ways that the styles link, or counter, each other.

Our most obvious challenge is how to fund our show. Our production costs are between $8000-$10,000, and they include theater rent, costumes, lighting, props and set design, printing and marketing, studio rent for rehearsals, videography, and music. As producers and choreographers, Kieran and Karen carry the risk and responsibility of meeting all the production costs, plus paying all the performers. We are relying on tickets sales and this fundraising campaign to make it happen! We are looking to the Kickstarter initiative to raise about half of our needed funds. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THIS CREATIVE WORK!
