What is Wood Haven?
Wood Haven (under construction) will become a beautiful, intimate space for dance/movement workshops, trainings, and performances. Austin is changing; many small, affordable spaces like these are disappearing. Wood Haven will provide an accessible place for therapists and artists to nurture the mental, emotional, physical, and creative health of our amazing city. This will be Barbara Jo’s “home base” and it will be affordably available to the community. Wood Haven is located just 8 miles south of Oak Hill, closer than you think!
We are closing in on completion this month and we need you for the final and most important element to top it off: the gorgeous maple hardwood flooring. We’ve built our floor a home, will lay the sub floor to hold and cushion it, and will care for it with love and respect.
Why do we care?
For over 20 years, Barbara Jo Stetzelberger, LCSW, BC-DMT, has been bringing Dance/Movement Therapy to “at risk” school kids, foster children, Social Workers, cancer patients, and people who are coping with loss, depression, anxiety, and loneliness. It has always been a challenge to present these offerings in spaces that are welcoming, safe, and conducive to the work.
Out of necessity we most often have to push back desks, move heavy furniture, and utilize small spaces or multipurpose rooms that can be just plain yucky (that are often less than private!) AND of all things we end up dancing/moving on cement! Moving on a cement floor is dangerous and damaging.
We want to cushion the “hard places” in people’s lives! Check out one of our past fundraising videos for Move It!, a Dance/Movement Therapy Outreach program directed by Barbara Jo. We hope to bring Move It! and other efforts like it to Wood Haven.
Your monetary gift will help turn the dreams of Wood Haven into reality! You will put the finishing touch on this valuable resource for the Austin community. What are the dreams?
- To be an inclusive home for dance/movement artists, youth outreach, intergenerational play, storytelling, laughter and connection.
- To be a performance venue for Austin's growing creativity and a training center for deepening skills and knowledge in the quickly expanding field of somatic arts.
Your real gift will be stepping into a circle of open hearted, like minded friends and colleagues to create something new and wonderful for Austin.
Please help fund this special sprung wood floor!
Who are we?
From the director Barbara Jo Stetzelberger:
"I am someone who has always been able to find healing, strength, peace and connection with others through movement and creativity. I trust serious play! I have the credentials, experience, awards and successes to back it up: MindBodyFIT. I’ve committed my life to helping people come home to their bodies to find comfort, power, joy and community. Even teenagers! For decades my passionate dream has been to create a beautiful, spacious, welcoming, playful home and sanctuary for our dancing community and training center for the growing field of Somatic Arts."
What is Dance/Movement Therapy?
Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT), like art and music therapy, allows us to express aspects of our life journey that cannot be captured by words alone. As defined by the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA), DMT is the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process that furthers the emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual. It is a holistic approach to healing, based on the empirically supported assertion that mind, body, and spirit are inseparable and interconnected; changes in the body reflect changes in the mind and vice versa. Find out more on the ADTA's official website.
Risks and challenges
The wood flooring is the crucial element to completion. We are depending on funding to open the doors of Wood Haven to our wonderful Austin community.
Other risks might include:
- People will love it so much they won’t leave and the entire dance floor is taken up with sleeping bags.
- Barbara Jo may continue to expand her collection of floor pillows rendering the space impassable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
