I am thrilled about my current collection of songs and aim to record them. A couple of years ago I encountered producer Craig Street (Chris Whitley, KD Lang, Meshell Ndegeocello, Cassandra Wilson, Chocolate Genius, Norah Jones). I sent him a few songs and thats when our year plus long conversation started. We would sit at his kitchen table while he patiently listened to new demos I recorded on my iPad. We talked about music, the industry, our individual experiences over the years, and eventually we would arrive at our intent, which was to understand and pursue the integrity in the crafting and producing of songs. Craig has championed my work since the day we first shared Coffee at his home and he has since become a dear friend. He takes time from his family to attend my shows and shares his experience as an audience member while listening to me ramble about the years of touring, writing, and changes in my singing and writing style. We could talk for hours. We did talk for hours. The last visit I had with him he explicitly said "It's time for you to make a record and to trust yourself. Don't be afraid to trust yourself. Ask for help. It's ok."
I have many dear friends like Craig who have encouraged and supported me. Working full time and living within my means results in no funds for a project. Another friend reminded me by saying "There is never a good time to ask for help. It's always awkward. just do it."
A year ago I received a small grant from our local community arts partnership. Soon after that a friend handed me an envelope with a cash gift and written on the envelope was " For your music". My belief that I might receive help if I asked for it was strengthened by those two actions and also by the years of support from friends and listeners.
The "My Savant" video was filmed by my friend Matt Yarrow. It was a cold late winter day. I fell hard on a sidewalk seconds after he was done filming. I still feel a little soreness in my ribs, but it's a reminder that I might have to experience a certain discomfort to reach this goal. For the video above we used a song that I recorded on my iPad in a swift fashion. It's a rough version for sure, but if you are not familiar with my music, this will supply you with a hint of my musical style.
Craig and I will be recording with musicians from near and far and with engineers in a studio here in upstate New York. The songs are ready. It will take only few days to knock it out and with both of our connections to great resources it won't take long to have a finished project.
What I want more than anything is to have the opportunity to continue making albums. With the album I would also like to tour internationally again. This new album will be available on vinyl, limited edition CD and as a download of course. If you are able and feel inspired then by all means please help me continue on this path of music. I have been anxious about inquiring for help while fully aware that I might not raise the funds. I'm willing to face that fear. My intention is to take a percentage of the proceeds of every sale and donate to Suicide Prevention here in Ithaca N.Y. I work nights with my full time job and rarely have time to perform benefits, so this is one way I can help. I have grown tired of losing friends in general, but it is extremely hard when it is to Suicide. It is the least I can do.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and if you can't help me financially please think about sharing this link with others. You are reading this now and that already means so much.
Here is where the funds would go.
- mixing & mastering
Check out my music on sound cloud. They are mostly songs I recorded on my iPad. These are some of the songs that will be recorded in the studio.....
Risks and challenges
The risk would be that the project timing is effected by musician and engineer and manufacturing schedules. In that case I would be diligent in keeping backers posted by sending out updates and free downloads or of past recordings. I would do my best at managing expectations.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
