About this project
I started doing stand up about 20 years ago. If I'm being honest, it hasn't gone as well as I'd hoped. In 2012 I was lucky enough to go to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and it opened my eyes to a different way of doing stand up. In America, everyone is focused on squeezing the most laughs out in the shortest time and, I believe, we lose making our comedy meaningful. It's a risk to make your comedy act about something personal and many times, audiences aren't interested.
I believe the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is a place where comedians are allowed to take chances and are rewarded for doing so. The festival allows for a more expansive style of comedy that is not often seen in the US. I'd like to take a shot at doing a style of comedy that I believe suits me better than the US model. Artistically, this is a huge challenge for me. To step out of what I've known and grown comfortable with and to step into the unknown. But that just makes me want to do it more.
The name of the show is Hot Head. The goal of the show is to talk honestly about the anger issues I've struggled with all my life - in a funny way. It took me many years to get to a place onstage, where as an artist, I know I can talk about my anger, and where it came from, without freaking out an audience. And to actually make it funny. It's a fine balance but one I now understand.
But I need a little assistance. It's not easy getting to Melbourne from the US because of that ocean thing. And while I'm there, I'll need to stay somewhere. There are also other costs, like PR, food (I am going to eat), and an ad for the festival guide. Turns out it all adds up. And there's a venue, etc. I'll probably need water, as well. Just thinking of stuff now as I write. All of this adds up. So, I'm asking for help.
And, if I can fund my trip to Melbourne, there is a greater possibility we can get Gareth Reynolds there for a live Dollop or two.
Also, if funded, 98% chance of world peace.
Risks and challenges
I just need to get there. Knowing I can afford the trip will make it real, instead of just the fantasy it is currently. If I have the means to get there and a place to stay while I'm there, it will push me make Hot Head the best it can be.
So, I hope you can help me out. I assume if you're here it's because you've enjoyed my work on podcasts and/or my last album. I appreciate the support you've given me so far.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
