Over 500 billion single-use bottles are made every year. Very few are recycled. Many of the remaining go to landfill or the ocean.
We asked ourselves, "What can we do with with these bottles?"
Our mission is to untrash the planet. We are committed to using only 100% recycled materials in our products.
To get to 100% recycled and to prepare for rapid production from day one has taken some serious brainpower.
We've engaged many experts, including an industrial design company, to design a pair of sunglasses frames that could be made from one recycled PET bottle.
They've had to re-engineer the hinge of the sunglasses so it too can be made from recycled plastic, making the frames not only 100% recycled, but also 100% recyclable.
good citizens is committed to using only recycled plastic in its frames from day one – no virgin plastic, no metal hinges, no screws - just recycled PET.
Will you be citizen#1?
When you buy a pair, you are issued with a citizen number. It’s yours for life. The first 1000 will be remembered forever.
The first person to buy through our Kickstarter campaign, will be our very first founding citizen - they will be good citizen #1.
As we develop new styles of glasses and bring out new products, we’ll turn to all our founding citizens for feedback and ideas.
Please note: As we have rewards with multiple purchasing options, we can't allocate the final order of citizen numbers until the campaign closes. Your backer number is not your citizen number.
As a nod to the origins of the bottles, we'll launch with three colours - cola, lemonade and aqua. The frame finish is frosted matt.
As we grow, we'll launch other limited edition colourways.
Our sunglasses have been designed in Sydney; they will be made in Sydney and the recycled plastic comes from Melbourne. This brand is Australian born and bred.
Our mission is to always make locally. As we expand into other countries, we will replicate our setup in Australia and set up production in those countries.
For every pair sold, we'll pull the equivalent weight of 45 plastic bottles out of the Mediterranean Ocean.
The plastic collected is then either recycled or used in educational programs around the world to inform people of the plastic issue. We chose this partner because they not only collect and recycle ocean plastic, but they also work with communities at risk from social exclusion to remove the waste.
We are offering special Kickstarter deals on our sunglasses.
Our non-polarised sunglasses are available for as little as $59 and our polarised sunglasses are available for $85.
After the campaign, our sunglasses will cost $89 (non-polarised) / $139 (polarised).
You can buy singles, pairs and 10s. Perfect for businesses wanting to give their staff or clients awesome Christmas or summer presents!
Please add these costs for postage to the pricing. This is up to four pairs.

We've vigorously tested the design through multiple prototypes.
All three of our partners - the industrial design company, the recycled plastics experts and the manufacturer - have completed their tests and are happy to proceed.
We're in a great position to press go on production.
Here are some of our prototypes in action.
Note: These are 3D prints. Our finished sunglasses will be a beautiful matt, frosted premium finish.
Here's a selection of photos taken over the last year on our journey.
Our sunglasses incorporate the three best practice principles of sustainable design.
We’ve already assembled the team to help deliver this project. With this level of expertise, we're able to scale from day one. We're all united in our mission to untrash the planet™.
Packaging: We’ve kept it to an absolute minimum. Nothing winds us up more than needless packaging, so we've paired the packaging back as much as we can and still ensure they reach you safely.
Our mission is to untrash the planet™. We'll do this by turning trash into good. By backing us today you help us on the first part of our journey with sunglasses.
We have many more product extensions planned. Some will use 300 bottles in production.
Risks and challenges
As unbelievable as it sounds, this hasn’t been done before - no-one in Australia is using 100% single-use recycled PET plastic to make sunglasses.
To do this properly, we’ve had to break down many barriers, question the status quo and work people hard to think differently. We haven’t taken no for an answer and we’ve re-engineered elements of the design to ensure the frames are 100% recycled and recyclable.
Make no mistake, the journey hasn’t been easy; certainly not as easy as it should be. It’s taken some big brains, lots of science and plenty of testing, but we know we have the right partners onboard to make this happen.
We have engaged three leaders in the recycled plastics space:
1. Industrial design experts specialising in recycled plastics
2. Australia’s leading recycled plastics supplier
3. One of Sydney’s best plastic manufacturers
Combined with exceptional branding and business brains, we know we can make the business of turning single-use plastic bottles into sunglasses a huge success.
We’ve also set up the business so it’s scaleable from day one. We believe we can make serious impact.
