On May 27th 2009, I decided to step out on faith and create my own comic book. The first thing I did was jot down a bunch of different abilities. Soon I would attach these abilities to specific characters, and Lightweightz was born.
Inspired by 1 Corinthians 12:7 ("Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good"), Lightweightz is about eight teenagers who after discovering they have unique abilities, must now decide how they are going to use them. With Lightweightz I set out to tell a different kind of superhero story: One where each of the characters' abilities would have direct implications for how they relate to others, and one that was told from a Christian worldview.
The Lightweightz saga will consist of at least three releases. The first two will be anthologies introducing readers to the characters, and the third will be a graphic novel (with the possibility of telling future stories). The first release, Lightweightz: The Anthology Part One came out in July 2012, and so far has received some good feedback.
Here are a couple of videos featuring other indy creators talking about what they like about Lightweight: The Anthology Part One and why you should support Lightweightz: The Anthology Part Two:
“I like how with a few pages [Justin] developed these characters and tugged the reader’s emotions with the teens' lives and issues. Also the cliffhangers were great."
- Melchizedek Todd, Creator of Allegories of the Way, Faithland, and The United
“With me, the comic has to have a combination of great story and great art, and this one has both…[Justin's] work honors God and contains elements based on Biblical principals that believers and non-believers could understand.“
- Justin Swartz, comic writer and blogger
It is drawn and colored by the extremely talented Przemyslaw R. Dedelis and Lya Cuello respectively. I'm blessed to have such a talented team, and to say I'm excited to be working on the second release, Lightweightz: The Anthology Part Two is an understatement. What started as an idea has become much more. It's a movement.
And now I'm asking you to join me.
The purpose of the campaign is to raise funds to cover the production and printing costs of Lightweightz: The Anthology Part Two. Specifically, the funds will go towards paying the artist and colorist to draw and color the remaining pages, and to do a small print run of the comic once it's complete. Something I said in the video regarding the print run may be misleading, so let me clarify: If the campaign is successful, there will be print runs for both anthologies to cover all of the backers' rewards.
Here are the characters featured in Lightweightz: The Anthology Part Two:
Ethnicity: African American
Ethnicity: Mexican American
Ethnicity: Japanese American
A huge thanks for checking out the campaign, and I hope you consider backing and spreading the word. You can check out the media page to learn more.

A couple of quick notes to backers:
(1) The reward schedule is based on the anticipated completion and printing of Lightweightz: The Anthology Part Two. All other rewards, including digital and print copies of Lightweightz: The Anthology Part One, will be processed (in the case of print copies) and distributed immediately following the campaign.
(2) For backers who have already purchased a digital copy of Lightweightz: The Anthology Part One, another digital copy will not be included in your reward package unless you request it.
Risks and challenges
Having already completed a comic, I have a better understanding of what needs to go into a finished product, and how long a project takes from being "done" in terms of fully-drawn, colored, and lettered, to being ready to release to readers. But if a challenge or obstacle arises, it will be addressed it immediately, and backers will be fully and consistently updated every step of the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
