What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

What is it?

Icosa-World is a laser engraved globe based on the Fuller projection of Earth. Its geometric shape is known as an icosahedron. It is a piece of art.

How big is it?

Icosa-World is approximately 9 inches tall, when sitting flat. It is a little over 11 inches from corner to corner.

What is it made of?

It is made from laser engraved MDF panels screwed to custom vertices. MDF is much more uniform and dimensionally stable than most wood products, which makes for a cleaner engraving. It is finished with a clear polyurethane.

What is the money for?

The funding raised on Kickstarter will help to buy product and shipping materials in quantity at a lower cost. I already have the necessary equipment, namely the laser cutter and 3D printer. This is why the funding goal is fairly low at $500.

Risks and challenges

Time: Like most Kickstarter projects, schedule risks are the most likely to cause angst. Fortunately, this is not my first project and I succeeded in delivering on time in my previous project. Also, the production schedule for the Icosa-World is quite conservative and leaves room for mishaps along the way.

3D Printer: The vertices of the Icosa-World are printed on a 3D printer to keep costs down and enable low volume production. I have not had an issue with the printer yet, but even if I did, I work 30 minutes from the printer's manufacturer and have received great support from them in the past.
