About

What's the project?

A beautiful and edgy book called The New Deviants: Young Chinese Artists and Censorship featuring tons of full-color reproductions of work by exciting new Chinese artists. As the title suggests, we will explore issues of censorship and how they affect the art and daily practice of these artists. We will discuss with these artists what is taboo, how is it possible to circumvent or subvert the rules and other topics. The book will be like a lively conversation between artists, with interviews, statements, short essays and lots of great pictures. The artist and influential art dealer Daniela Luna-- from Argentina but based in Beijing --will be co-authoring and co-editing the book with me.

Why censorship in China?

Because the famous Chinese artist and peace activist Ai Weiwei has been  imprisoned for "crossing the red line" as a Chinese culture spokesman said. Because China is booming economically. Because the art scene in China is also booming. Because, even as the art scene booms and the economy grows wildly, Chinese artists still face the potential threat of censorship.

This book will also be a good introduction for anybody who wants to do artistic and cultural projects in this country, and doesn't want to have cultural misunderstandings and end up in trouble or expelled!

Why "deviants"?

The title comes from the idea of the artist as a deviant, which is a term commonly used to describe subversive artists by oppressive regimes. Leading up to the politically motivated arrest of Ai Weiwei Chinese state media was referring to him as a "deviant" and said: "Ai Weiwei likes to do something 'others dare not do'." The book will feature young artists who also "do something others dare not do." Can Chinese artists "deviate" from societal norms to the point of social perversion? What is the social position of artists in China?

Why us?

Chris Kelley and Daniela Luna are both artists whose work often explores social and political issues. Daniela Luna is also a culture entrepreneur and she has been based in Beijing since 2010, meeting artists and working on many art and cultural projects. She has been researching Chinese artists and the art scene, part of this research has been featured as 4 spread article  for the important Argentine culture magazine DMag. (Read the online version in spanish)
Daniela brings her knowledge of Chinese art and her unusual combination as artist, curator and art dealer. Chris will bring his analytical skills and his viewpoint as an American artist and news junkie. We aren't historians or professional journalists; we are artists and our book will be an "artists talking to artists" book, something personal and intimate yet accessible to everyone.

What's the money for?

We need help funding the research, interviews, travel and expenses, editing and the publication of a limited edition book. We will then pursue traditional publishers to reach a wider audience. We will also video tape the interviews and other events for a future documentary. We want to get as much bang for the buck as possible!

What do you get?

A warm feeling inside. And lots of other great rewards, ranging from postcards to limited edition prints to original Polaroids by Chris Kelley specially made in China for this project, original art by Daniela Luna and much more.
