Hello. I am Kirsty Whiten, I am your favourite neighbourhood dead monkey artist. I make meticulous and confronting drawings and paintings about humans, their psychology, sexuality and behaviour. I work in a hermity studio near Edinburgh in Scotland, playing and working with models of all sorts, telling stories of what’s underneath.
The plan: I’m going to make a beautiful, limited edition art book titled: ICON ORACLE - Ritual care for lost minds, a collection of work that I’ve made over the last year. The book will be gorgeously designed by the talented @designbyzag in Glasgow, a tactile softbound book with full colour plates. It all depends on the orders I get from you, but I estimate there will be 200 - 300 copies. I hope you will back the project by pre-ordering a book or one of the special rewards in the list.
I have got some of the funds I need in hand, but not enough, and this kickstarter will mean I can do it properly, with really high quality production and design.
Why: I love and collect books by my favourite artists (Paula Rego, Charles Avery, Marlene Dumas, Frida Kahlo, Kathe Kollwitz, Grayson Perry….) It was such a thrill to make to make one of my own two years ago with your support here on kickstarter - I feel it's time to go again! This work looks good in reproduction, and I want to present all the images together to share the stories and ideas with you.
I want to make it affordable for more people to collect my art - not everyone can stretch to an original piece of art, and fewer can display the sort of disturbing images I create, in case their granny comes round for tea. However, the drawings and paintings mean more when they are seen together, and I know I have an audience who will want to have this tome on their shelf.
Book contents: I’ve been making ICON paintings with some extraordinary models. In the paintings they are taking part in an ecstatic ritual where they paint bright pigments onto each others skin. I’ve been through a weird time this year, a kind of crisis I guess, and I’ve had times of feeling more cracked and vulnerable than I’ve ever been before. I was inspired to make some really tender and reverent images, of people who are embodied and comfortable in their own skin. People in moments of rapture and ecstacy and letting go.
I’ve also been Painting ORACLES – these are kind of psycho magical images - signposts of the subconscious. They are surreal, sometimes funny, sometimes dark. you can come back to them many times and find new meanings – like the symbols of the tarot, or the ink splats used in psychoanalysis. They are the malformed children of Carl Jung and Hieronymus Bosch.
All of this work will be in an exhibition in Edinburgh this summer (ICON ORACLE, at Arusha Gallery, opening 7th June) but I want to make it into a beautiful book, and for that I need your support again.
The hardcover book I made two years ago was funded here on kickstarter, and it was amazing – we made our goal in the first day and the final total blew my mind. I’ve got everything lined up – I’m going to work with those talented designers, design by Zag again… they are already busy researching the themes of witchcraft and shamanism, for their brilliant concept of how to present this work.
What I will make is something like a catalogue of the work, with a twist. I want it to be, like the Wronger Rites book was, a piece of art in itself. It will be lush and tactile, and play with power-clashing colour the way that I do in my paintings. I want you to be able to hold the body of work in your hands and keep it on your shelf.

Risks and challenges
I've given realistic timeframes for getting the rewards out to everyone, which allows for one or two things to go pear-shaped along the way, without doing any damage. I've done this before - it will be just fine.
I'm more confident this time, because my book project from two years ago means I have experience, and I know who I want to work with. Design by Zag were just starting out when we made the WRONGER RITES book together, now they have also got more experience and lots more contacts in printing. This is all lined up and I am confident we can make the deadline.
I'll be gearing up for my exhibition at Arusha Gallery in Edinburgh, which opens on 7th June, so I will be very busy with both projects, but since they tie together and are all about the same work, I don't see that as a problem, I think they will feed in to each other.
Some of the budget is in place, and this kickstarter will complete the funds needed to go ahead. The main problem I face is not making the goal, so please back the project!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
