STRETCH GOAL!!!
You. Guys. Rock! Thanks to your support, we reached the book publishing fundraising goal in one day! Now it's time to spice things up a little:

$4000 by July 18th

On that date, I'm running Badwater, "world's toughest footrace". It's a 135 mile dance through Death Valley. If we meet the stretch goal, the hideous, skin-tight cat singlet will make an appearance. Click HERE to see the first fateful race where the cat unitard made an appearance. Guaranteed mid-race humiliation will ensue. Let's do this!!

"I almost got barfed on by a stranger. I ate a Snickers bar while standing in a flash flood. I prayed that I wouldn’t get struck by lightning. I got mud in my underwear. I helped people keep going when they wanted to give up. And then later they helped me keep going when I wanted to give up. I saw God’s fingerprints in the beauty around me. You know, just your average ultramarathon."

After running a gut full of 100 mile races, a mind-numbing 205 mile run, a near-death mosquito attack, and that one time I ran a half marathon as Nacho Libre, I’ve collected quite the arsenal of stories that I’m not sure I’d believe if I hadn’t actually lived them.

Nowhere Near First walks you through some of those ultramarathon adventures. But I also open up about dark parts of my youth when my father took his life. I discuss the lessons I’ve learned about suffering. And about living life to the fullest. And about how all this applies to running. And about how awesome running is. And about training for ultramarathons. (And about my love for Twinkies and Ben & Jerry’s.)

Your funding will cover the book design, the book editing, and the book printing. Nowhere Near First carries with it an all-star cast. Award winning photographer Jeremiah Barber took the cover shot. And it looks SWEET. The Foreward is written by remarkable runner and writer Jennilyn Eaton. (I got goosebumps when I read it.) And the book is being edited by distinguished author and photographer Jill Homer. Basically, my goal is to give you the kind of quality product that will blow your mind.

I’m hoping Nowhere Near First will make you laugh. I’m thinking parts might make you cry. When all is said and done, I hope you finish the book feeling inspired to go tackle something crazy and amazing.

Thank you so, so much for your support of this adventure! Are you wanting to back this project? Well, then, consider this a gigantic virtual hug. If you were standing here right now, I’d give you a high five and a homemade cinnamon roll. I hope the universe rewards you with good karma in the form of a pot of gold in your backyard, toenails that never turn black after long runs, and a baby pet unicorn.

Here’s what people are saying about Nowhere Near First:

“Cory Reese writes with humor, humbleness and honesty. His story is both uplifting and real, and his tales of persistence and perseverance are sure to inspire, whether you’re at the front of the pack or nowhere near first. Regardless of the title, this book’s a winner!” ~ Dean Karnazes, author of Ultramarathon Man

“Cory Reese’s book “Nowhere Near First” is an immensely entertaining and profoundly educational story about overcoming challenges to forge a meaningful life. As it recounts his ultrarunning exploits in funny and insightful ways, his story and experiences are universal and relevant to all readers as they pursue their dreams and face the inevitable suffering and setbacks along the way. Reese’s story is must-read for people looking to find meaning and purpose in modern day society, and as they choose the paths and actions that will define the 21st century. Read this book - you will enjoy it and it will make the world a better place for everyone.” ~ Karl Hoagland, Publisher, UltraRunning Magazine

"Cory mixes his unmistakable humor and detail into a few dozen short chapters that can be read all at once or spread out over time. From his tear-jerking teenage years with his father to running races dressed as Mexican wrestlers to the fine art of balancing ultra-training and family life, Cory paints a real-life picture of a normal, passionate guy in a crazy sport filled with other fun characters. If you're just starting out on your running path, you'll have a better understanding of what you're getting into, and if you're a grizzled ultra veteran, you'll connect to the details and emotions of this wacky sport.” ~ Eric Schranz, Host, Ultrarunnerpodcast.com

Risks and challenges

All the hard stuff is done. The book is written and is currently in the final editing phase. Graphic design for the book is nearly complete. By the time the Kickstarter campaign ends, the manuscript should be prepared to be printed and formatted for Kindle. I put the delivery date by November 2016 but I expect the book to be printed and shipped far before then.
