What is a XTOOL?
XTOOL is a stackable, storage, stool inspired by the casual sitting use of the all-time favorite milk crate. Keeping the storage qualities of the crate and adding a plywood seat and legs, this durable, versatile and playful stool can be used indoors and outdoors.
We envision the XTOOL as the first piece of a larger family of furniture using custom milk-crates.
What can I use it for?
Well… the real questions would be what can you not use it for... And the short answer would be anywhere you need sitting or storage or both.
The XTOOL is perfect to use outdoors and indoors: on your terrace for gatherings, to seat while bathing your child and store toys inside, for books, for food trucks, at your garage or garden, to get extra storage for your office supplies and a seat at lunchtime... you name it (and send us a photo if you'd like to share)
Why support XTOOL?
Because we have poured our souls into this project and the only way we can make it happen is with your help!
We have identified and worked with local manufacturers for some time and we are now ready to start producing the XTOOL in larger quantities in order to keep the costs reasonable... And we need the final push, your push!
After several months of prototyping, testing and more testing we have it: a final product that we love and are ready to share and spread everywhere.
Earlier this year the XTOOL was exhibited at the designboom mart in the International Contemporary Furniture Fair - ICFF in New York. During the month of November the XTOOL will be feature at the 3rd Iberoamerican Design Bienial - BID12 in Madrid, Spain as well as part of the "No Materia" Industrial Design Exhibition held at the Carlos Cruz Diez Museum in Caracas, Venezuela.
To our crate-lover backers we will be sending some rewards (illustrated below) to show our crate-titud. So you will get a XTOOL at a great price and we will be grateful for your support.
By supporting the XTOOL you are helping us make this project a reality, you are taking it home with you and you are giving us your trust (and money) to produce the XTOOL and put our design minds back into growing the family of fun and crate-zy products. With your support you are helping us build a sustainable design model that keeps things smart, simple and local (as much as possible).
How is it made?
A real 16-quart milk crate, 11mm CNC cut plywood parts and four Velcro ties assembled into a XTOOL.
XTOOL Dimensions: 13" W x 13" D x 16.5" H
Crates - just for you!
Combo Colab crates are manufactured for us by a local New Jersey milk crate manufacturer. This way we make sure all dairies, farmers and related industries are able to keep using their crates out on the streets and you get a real, strong “specimen” of the all-time favorite milk crate. Our manufacturer uses up to 80% recycled plastic or as much as possible without compromising the strength of the crate. We work closely with him to get the limited edition colors we offer.
Mutant Crates - the exceptional unique reject
Upon our prototyping phase, during one of our many visits to the crate manufacturing plant we came across a "mutant" crate that was not one color or the other, it was both, mixed and swirled into what seemed to be a random pattern.
Indeed, this was a unique crate resulting from the process of pouring a new color through the mold after a run of a different color, hence a mutation of the crate - this was love at first sight!
We have request to keep all those unique weird looking mutant crates so we can offer them to you. No two are alike and only a limited amount come out before the the mold is "cleaned".
Plywood - tailored to the crate
The plywood pieces are designed to be a perfect fit for our crates; they are made also in New Jersey. For this edition of XTOOL we are using Baltic Birch with a clear acrylic laminate finish. Since our parts are relatively small we were able to re-use left-over material from other runs and so we get to save some scraps and money to pass those savings on to you. Because of this you should expect to see some very minor marks on the surface, but nothing truly noticeable as to disturb the strength or design integrity of the piece.
Velcro - sticky and strong
Our Velcro ties are the one US product traveling further, yet they are still manufactured in the country. They come all the way from California, we are truly glad they made into our final product; we find them to be of exceptional quality and the perfect fit!
Seating Felt Pad - from a little further away...
As the US is a country of immigrants, we welcome into our accessory line the FilzFelt brand (Germany) which we use for the 5mm felt pad. They offer a water-resistant, 100% wool felt that is undeniably worth it.
Custom and variety
Custom color crates and plywood finishes are available for larger quantities; we can also offer a wide variety of laminated plywood, either acrylic colors or textured finishes. Please get in touch with us if you are searching for something unique and custom. We are always on the look for new sources of inspiration, materials and challenges.
For any amount that you give we are wholeheartedly crate-ful! And to help demonstrate our crate-titud we will send these rewards your way:
About COMBO COLAB
Mateo Pinto and Carolina Cisneros, both architects hailing from Venezuela and Argentina, have been collaborating on design and public art projects since 2006. In 2010 they founded Combo Colab; their practice focuses on the design and production of hybrid projects and products of variable scales and temporalities.
Big Thank you!
We are deeply crate-ful for all the support we have received here, now and before, and specially to:
- Tara Raye Russo, the master of videos!
- Bernardo Risquez from Different Fountains for making awesome music and letting us use it.
- Dave and Madeline from SUAD for allowing us to photograph on their fantastic building.
Also Ignacio Urbina-Polo, Stephen Hutchkins, Francisco Lyons and Jacinto Padin for their support throughout the development of this project.
(and since this is not the Oscars we are not entering any more names, besides you all know who you are!)
Risks and challenges
The first challenge will be to spread the word and keep up with the promotion of the project to make it successful now and beyond. But we trust that with the right support and all the energy we are putting into this we will make it happen.
By production time, our challenge will be to make sure we meet our deadlines and keep the quality standards of the XTOOL. We will continue to work closely with our manufacturers to make sure we send you way only the best!
Making sure we can coordinate to deliver on time is going to be a big task since we don't know what the demand to supply will be, but we will make every effort possible to have things rolling and we will keep our communication clear and open with our backers so you can be informed on every step of the process.
We feel confident that we can accomplish our goals but know that as we enter the world of large-scale production we will have to face and solve challenges that are hard to predict, yet we strongly rely on and trust our team of manufacturers so this keeps our minds at ease.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
