About

THE PROJECT

Quadrigae is a simple game that reproduces all the emotions of a day in the Ancient Rome at the Circus Maximus.

The developers of this tabletop game are an historian and writer of novels and an archeologist both members of a Cultural Associations that divulgates culture through original and non-conventional ways: tabletop games are one of them.

Chariot races had, in the ancient Rome, lot of followers. Not only the people frequented the races, but emperors, senators, intellectuals, writers crowded the circus.

The Aurigae, who drove chariots with two, three, four, sometimes eight or ten horses, were idols of the crowd. People, actually, didn’t support particularly the driver, but the team.

As in the modern football teams players and coaches come and go, but the affection for our own team remains, so, in the ancient Rome, there were followers of the Blue, the Green, the Red and the White, and they remained followers of the same team for all their life, in joy and in suffering.

The teams were four (the emperor Domiziano tried to add other two teams, but his attempt failed). Two of them were the top teams (the blue and the green); the other two were the outsiders. Each team run for the victory of the team itself, not for that of a specific driver, but the best drivers received by victories celebrity and money (a lot of money). Of course, even if some of the drivers became famous and rich, the most of them lived in the lowlife of the circus, eternally at the service of their leaders, looking for a flash of glory; some of them finished their career because of serious accidents, others died falling from their light chariots, run over by hoofs and wheels.

The races continued for days and in one day the same aurigae run more times (the horses only one or two). There were races with four, eight, twelve or, rarely, sixteen chariots. Races with bigae (two horses), trigae (three horses), quadrigae (the most common, with four horses). There were “circus shows” (circus was the name of the hippodrome): evolutions, acrobatics, exhibitions of skill driving chariots with ten or more horses.

Fanaticism was extreme: the beholders offended, and sometimes aggressed the defeated drivers and the adversary followers, and the joy for winning and bitterness for losing continued out of the circus, in a never ending competition.

Quadrigae reproduces the chariot races through a fast and enjoying system which gives you the chance to revive a whole day at the races in an evening: a single race endures from ten minutes to one hour, depending on the number of chariots running.

The aurigae, each one with his own name and characteristics, are part of one of the four teams, assuming the role of the captain looking for the victory or of a helper who try to facilitate his captain blocking and attacking the adversaries.

Not all of them will arrive whole at the end: some will fall without damage but humiliation, some others will remain stunned and out of the races; the unluckiest… will die.

As the owner of a team (Dominus factionis) you’ll decide the tactics of the race and sign on your register the won races, good results and injuries.

THE DEVELOPEMENT

In designing Quadrigae we wanted a fast and fun game but also respectful of historical truth.

We have therefore carefully documented not only the world of chariot races, but also the circuses and in particular the Circus Maximus of Rome that we have reproduced with some adaptations (partial reduction in the length and width of the stands), in the board of our game.

For the rules of movement we have developed a previous project inspired by racing with sled dogs (!), while for the rules of aggression, necessary to make the game unpredictable and fun, we have adopted a rather traditional but certainly effective system, which allows any aggression to potentially transform itself into an unpredictable carom of chariots overturns.

To allow even younger children to play, we have finally introduced simple junior rules.

We printed some demo copies to test the playability and for about two years we brought the trial version in various contexts playing with adults, children and “professional” players.

Now the result satisfies us and we feel ready to product it. We are convinced that we have created an original and fun society game also capable of intriguing about ancient history and, perhaps, inspiring the players to know it better.

PRODUCTION AND FULFILLMENT PLAN

The print drafts of all materials and rules in English and Italian are ready and we have already made some test prints.

If we reach the expected target, the production of the cardboard material will be entrusted to a single Italian company while for the supply of the dice we will rely on an English company.

For packaging we will rely on a Social Cooperative in Verona (Italy).

We believe that in about two months from the achievement of the target the product will be ready for shipment, which will be entrusted to a European freight forwarder.

Risks and challenges

The production of the game does not foresee risk factors as no particularly complex materials must be produced and the entire production of original material will be entrusted to a single company with which we have already worked with satisfaction in the past.
