Our Mission and Our Knife
Inspired by the resurgence of Detroit—the excitement, the creativity, the presence—we wanted to be part of this story while helping to rebuild the community. Our passion for beautiful design and purposeful products inspired us to create Alexandrine & Cass.
We are a product design company with three core pillars: 1) offering modernly designed, yet traditionally crafted products 2) supporting our community 3) following our passions.
When discussing our first product we kept in mind our passion for food and knew the chef’s knife was the perfect product to launch our brand. Food is at the center of modern culture and the knife is quintessential to preparing all foods. For nearly a year, we have been working towards designing and selecting the materials for our knife; finding the perfect craftsmen to partner with; and understanding our core customers’ needs.
The 8” Chef’s Knife by Alexandrine & Cass is the result of this work.
Our knife, designed in Detroit and made in Spain, is a full tang blade born from Spanish MoVa stainless steel.
Our distinct Spanish steel is known for its balance between durability, flexibility and performance. To enhance this characteristic, we have purposely designed the blade with a heavier weight towards the front, allowing for effortless slicing and chopping.
We have put our blade through rigorous testing to ensure that we have provided you with exceptional sharpness. We have benchmarked the best of the mass-market competitors—Wüsthof, Zwilling, and Shun—to ensure that we match and potentially surpass them in functional expectations. The resulting sharpness, paired with the uniquely weighted blade, has resulted in an exceptional cutting experience that allows your knife to slice a tomato paper thin, but also to crack through a cantaloupe with ease and precision.
Not only is our blade functional, but timelessly beautiful. Instantly recognizable is the stunning curve at the heel of our blade seamlessly connecting the blade and handle together.
We believe in quality — quality in our products and quality in the experience using them. That's why we've made a distinctive and ergonomic handle, designed to perfectly mold to your hands. We sifted through samples and samples of the finest woods, settling on the perfect choice: olive wood.
The rich swirls in the honey colored wood lend extraordinary depth and richness. Olive wood is also incredibly dense and durable. Because of the natural beauty and uniqueness of the grain, no two handles are the same, and thus, this knife is crafted especially for you.
We have added a signature, yet subtle red liner that lets people know it's an Alexandrine & Cass knife and also help mitigate and potential expansion or contraction of the wood due to climate conditions.
Made in Spain
Part of our mission is to find traditional craftsmen and use their expertise to build our modernly designed products. In the case of our chef's knife, we turned to the town of Albacete, Spain.
They have been making knives since the 15th century. We have worked closely together to create the most durable, precise, and elegant knife possible. The passion for their craft and handmade attention-to-detail is clear throughout our final product for you.
The Leather Sheath
To protect your precision instrument, we have created a leather sheath exclusive to us. It all starts with supple Spanish leather that is hand selected and then undergoes a vegetable tanning process for 40 days. Only 10% of the worlds leather undergoes this process. Afterwards you end up with this sumptuous chestnut color that is environmentally friendly and all-natural.

Risks and challenges
After refining our product and brand for nearly a year, our 8” Chef's Knife is ready for production. We need to raise $10,000 to be able to scale for our first order. Our biggest risk is manufacturing delays and unforeseen logistic constraints. The funding raised through Kickstarter will be used to order your knife, purchase inventory and further market Alexandrine & Cass. We will be sure to communicate any issues that we experience during this process. Thank you for your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
