About

Coldharbour Tiles up-cycles plastic waste into luxury eco-tiles. We aim to prevent further plastic pollution from entering oceans and landfills by repurposing it into long-lasting tiles used for walls and decoration.

Our goal is to reduce some of the 300+ million tons of plastic produced globally every year, while also creating a luxury product that values quality and design.

Coldharbour Blue "Mediterranean Sea" and White "Polar Bear" Rectangle Tiles

By melting HDPE at low temperatures, we are able to re-purpose plastic waste into a durable, long-lasting product through the cleanest possible process.

Coldharbour Tiles currently offers 3 designs (Hexagon, Rectangle and Small Mosaic Square) in a variety of unique colours. Each hand-crafted tile is one-of-a-kind, responsible for removing a considerable amount of plastic from the environment.

Since we do not support or encourage the production of new plastics, our tile colours are determined by the plastic waste that's available. We have therefore created a mix of different shades of each colour.  Our production process has allowed for this shade differentiation to appear almost stone-like, providing great complexity and uniqueness to each tile. No two tiles are exactly the same!

While plastic products are convenient, they are destroying our environment and the health of its inhabitants. We focus on the 91% of plastic waste that is never recycled and transform it into high quality wall and decorative tiles.

Coldharbour Tiles are made from 100% recycled high-density polyethylene or HDPE (marked with the #2 recycle code). HDPE is commonly used for products such as shampoo bottles, water jugs, and bottle caps. It is water-proof, highly-durable, and resists insects, rot, and other chemicals. Our team transforms these commonly used household items into the perfect design element to upgrade your kitchen or bathroom!

The ultimate before and after comparison! From thousands of bottle caps to hundreds of "Fireball Sky" hexagon tiles!

Environmental protection is at the heart of our brand!  All of the plastic used in our production process is sourced from 100% recycled materials.

Without being recycled, plastics will slowly break down in oceans and landfills, causing harm to wildlife and ecosystems.  Over time, plastics degrade into micro plastics, releasing powerful green house gases like methane which contribute to our planet getting hotter. Together, let's #EndSingleUsePlastic!

We developed the concept for Coldharbour Tiles at IPRC Engineering School in Kigali, Rwanda.  With the help of a dedicated team of professors and interns, we were able to transform our idea into reality. We will always proudly be Designed in Rwanda

Whether you're planning a DIY project to tile your old coffee table, renovate your kitchen or bathroom, or are the owner of a home furnishings store and have been looking for a one-of-a-kind product to satisfy your eco-conscious costumers, we have something for you! Great decorative and wall tile deals are just a click away!

We want to keep it green from beginning to end.  That's why every order will be shipped in plastic-free, eco-friendly packaging.

Show off your support for plastic recycling by rocking one of our white or navy t-shirts,  available in both men and women's styles.

You'll receive a "Coldharbour DIY Tile Guide" with every purchase, providing installation information, design ideas and DIY tips and tricks.

If we are able to go beyond our initial funding goal (WHOOO!! LET'S DO IT!!), we will invest in the following:

1. Upgrade our machinery to increase production capacity.

2. Install renewable energy sources like solar to power our warehouse so we can keep it carbon neutral.

3. Move closer to you in Europe or the US so we can cut down on the environmental impact of long-distance shipping.

4. Invest in a garbage truck so that we can transport larger quantities of recycled plastic to our warehouse.

Coldharbour Tiles was founded in Rwanda by Emily Packer and Jake Calhoun.

Emily is an American/British freelance videographer and entrepreneur, mom of (almost!) three boys, and driven by a personal mission to prevent more micro-plastics from entering our environment.

Born in Washington DC, Jake Calhoun is the CFO of One Acre Fund, Founder of Yum Deliveries, dad of two wild children, and ready to roll up his sleeves to reduce the 91% of un-recycled plastics.

Coldharbour Tiles was a way to combine their environmental concerns with their values of high quality and design.

Risks and challenges

We've faced a number of challenges and obstacles while developing this product, so we are no stranger to having a curve ball or two thrown our way. We are just as excited about making these tiles as you are to receive them, and we will do everything in our power to deliver them on time.

While we're currently running a small operation in Rwanda, if we are able to hit our "Stretch Goals," we plan to relocate our warehouse to Europe or the US to maximise the amount of plastic we can access, while reducing the environmental impact of long-distance shipping. Over the course of the campaign, we will keep you regularly updated - and celebrate together! - as we up-cycle tons of plastic waste to create beautiful wall and decorative tiles for your home.

Long-lasting design

The average lifespan of wall tiles are 70+ years and often much longer. While we now associate plastic with being “cheap” or used for “throw-away” products, plastic itself, particularly HDPE, is an incredibly noble material. We hope to reshape the way consumers think of recycled plastic, not as something that should be quickly disposed of, but as a highly durable material that should only be used for items of high value and quality. We hope our products will be enjoyed for generations to come.

Reusability and recyclability

Coldharbour Tiles are made from 100% recycled plastic waste, and buffered for smoothness using only organic beeswax from Rwanda. That's it! Ceramic is the most popular type of tile worldwide, but has a high environmental impact due to the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the glaze required for production. Therefore, we've created an eco-friendly alternative to ceramic that's also big on design.

Sustainable materials

We are using 100% recycled plastic materials. Not only are these 'low-impact' materials, they are actually positive-impact - we take materials that would otherwise sit in a landfill and seep into the soil or make their way into the ocean and turn them into long lasting home improvement products.

Environmentally friendly factories

Coldharbour Tiles is committed to protecting the environment, and that extends to what energy sources are used as well. We plan to use solar energy to power our warehouse, and have also explored the possibility of using groundbreaking compressed air storage technology for after hours or on cloudy days.
