I believe many children today are lacking in two significant areas, an awareness of healthy food and where it comes from, and quality television programming. Though these two needs may seem unconnected, I would like to bring them together and offer a healthy solution to these problems with the development of an educational children's television program called "Grandma's Garden". A thirty
minute episode of "Grandma's Garden" will focus on four components; the arts, our feelings, at home family activities, and a visit to a magical
I believe the desire to raise healthy families is stronger today than ever, and healthy families mean healthy communities. I hope to produce quality programming that will provide children and their families with simple, practical ways in which to engage with their environment and with one another, small steps to growing a healthier world.
The goal for this Kickstarter campaign is to lay the foundation for the pilot episode of "Grandma's Garden". What we raise from this campaign will be used as start up funds for the project; actors, writers, graphics, website, and music, are just a few of the areas where this money will be invested. The total cost of producing the pilot episode will be over $30,000, so the Kickstarter campaign just gives us the push to start the climb. Once we have these foundational pieces in place, we can begin the process of engaging some major backers for the program. We hope you want to be part of making this television series come alive, for the children and for their future.
Risks and challenges
Whenever work is being done with a creative project in the arts, there are often ego problems involved, my own included. Though my role in the program will be to play Grandma, and the foundational ideas for this program are my own, I have no problem submitting to a producer or director who sees the bigger picture. I am also good at encouraging others to do the same.
There may be conflicts and obstacles as scripts are being developed, roles in the production team are being filled, and as we look for greater funding and a larger backing from the community, but I feel like I've learned some good communication skills and good conflict resolution skills during my twenty-three years in the elementary classroom.
My method of approaching conflict in general is to focus on the end result of understanding, not in simply being right. In regard to this specific effort, the end result is creating an excellent product. I want to remain true to my vision of equipping families for healthy living, but the road traveled toward reaching that vision may have different "scenery" along the way than I originally imagined. I am not afraid to discuss this "scenery" with those involved, as long as we stay on the path toward health, always growing, just like the garden!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
