Wouldn't it be great if you could have a drink (or two) and feel enhanced the next day?
DR HOPS KOMBUCHA BEER is meticulously crafted to be the most enlivening alcoholic beverage in the world. Starting with carefully filtered water and pure organic teas, we are brewing a grain-free, probiotic beverage that's 8-10% alcohol. It's unpasteurized and fully alive, with a tart, fruity taste and astounding aromatics. There's nothing available like it!
Our first tasting and fundraiser was awesome!
Our most active and health-conscious friends are especially excited. And our most sophisticated drinking friends are also pleased. We even have one backer who has promised to match whatever else we raise, so YOUR CONTRIBUTION COUNTS DOUBLE!! That is so grand.
With your help we will be able to complete our current product development phase and get our product out by early next year.
YOUR MONEY will go towards:
1) Brewing and tasting equipment, including 10 large glass bubblers, a heated production case (we're building it in the photo just below), two kegs, a CO2 system, a custom water filtration system, and various growlers, bottles and labels.
2) Ingredients and supplies, including organic black tea, green tea and yerba mate, organic evaporated cane juice and turbinado, raspberries, ginger, hops, wood chips, and other herbs and spices.
3) Some remaining licensing fees and business certifications, including the $800 CA LLC tax and additional training and certifications for the team.
4) The gorgeous logo of the meditating, levitating rabbit and all those killer rewards we're offering!
5) Tastings and focus group events that we will be hosting later this year. Please stay tuned for more and then come participate! Your feedback and participation will make us great.
What We've Accomplished So Far: We've already set-up the basics, like the LLC, the website, the business model and the plan. We've also created a slew of promising prototypes and have identified our basic process. We've also confirmed that there is a huge (untapped) demand for this product. Now we are focusing on a much larger product development and testing phase.
Action Plan: By later this year, we plan to have 12 strategic variations on our first core formula, about 72 gallons total. These variations will be tasted and evaluated at a series of tastings and focus groups. With your help, along with the help of our most discerning and market-savvy friends, we will dial in on the optimal formula for our first release. Concurrently, we will continue to develop our business model and plan, enter competitions, and attract additional capital. We'll make the jump to commercial production by early next year and get our life-changing product to market by spring.
Commitments: Our long-term plans include a carbon-negative production and distribution set-up, (solar panels, energy-savvy systems, water conservation, and lots of plant life), a gorgeous light-filled taproom and outdoor area, and a strong social and animal friendly role in the community. Expansion beyond the Bay Area will depend on a locally-owned, entrepreneurial business model, creating fun, rewarding lifestyles for go-getters in places like Austin, LA and Seattle. And we will continually advance the craft of probiotic alcohol.
YOUR PARTICIPATION in our fundraisers and focus groups will make us that much stronger.
YOUR SHARING of this campaign (and what we're up to in general) will open new doors! So please share with abandon! That's how the magic really happens. :-)
And stay tuned for frequent updates and upgrades. We're developing!
INSIDE VIEW: Temperature control is very important to the quality of our product. And until we have an industrial facility we've just got to get creative! (Even after that really, but you get the point.) Thank goodness Tommy has excellent power tools. ;-)
INSIDE VIEW: One of our core commitments is to promote and foster responsible water. After all, we are in California, and our product is almost all water! On the most basic level, that means filtering our municipal water supply efficiently and effectively. That's the most responsible practice we know of!
Our first step in that direction was to create a customized water filtration system. It's specifically designed to remove exactly what we need it to remove, with no water wasted. Won't you love knowing that the water in your kombucha beer is brilliant? You bet!
Here is our first humble system, and here's to the difference we'll make in the long run. Your support here is support for great water!
Risks and challenges
Our BIGGEST CHALLENGE is funding, and that's why we're here, starting with you. We know from direct experience and research that there is a huge potential market for our product. But we will still need about $250,000 to get this business up and running. This includes the cost of production space, equipment, licensing, insurance, ingredients, bottling, marketing, and some distribution.
We will meet this challenge by finding a third partner (or small group of partners) to fund this next key phase. We have the connections, the charm, the resolve and the courage to make this happen. Co-founder Joshua Rood has strong ties in several key communities, including the yoga and crossfit communities, lululemon, and Landmark Worldwide. He has also proven himself as a leader who inspires others to action, as the creator of a street festival Berkeley, the supervisor of large group life-coaching programs, and as a singer. Co-founder Thomas B. Weaver has his roots in the Bay Area and the theater community in Berkeley. He has been plotting, preparing and training for the role of a craft brewer for years. Together, AND with your generous sharing, we WILL get this mission fully funded.
Our NEXT BIGGEST CHALLENGE is the quality, consistency and production cost of our product. Dr Hops Kombucha Beer is a living, probiotic product which must be kept refrigerated and consumed fresh. Fortunately, the growing popularity of low-alcohol kombucha and delicate craft beers, has created a whole range of new distribution and retail structures for handling this type of product. We also have the advantage of operating right smack in the middle of our intended market, so we can deal with and address these issues directly. For now we are focused entirely on making our beverage for the greater Bay Area. The wealth of startup and produce related resources here also gives us a tremendous advantage.
OTHER BUSINESS RISKS include licensing hurdles, real estate challenges, new competition, loss of demand, supply collapse, etc. We are clear that these risks are real and that we are up to the challenge. You can count on our passion for the product and our combined capacity to learn and adapt. And the strength of our communities is further proof that we have what it takes. And YOU are a key player here!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
