In the Beginning...
I was looking through the Kickstarter world and saw that games and crafts were really popular. I thought to myself, "I could make a game," and decided to follow through.
Write what you know...
I went to a screen writer's seminar in Los Angeles in 2004 that Robert McKee put on and I remember him saying, "write what you know." Now I'm not sure if he coined that phrase or if he was phrasing someone else, but I took his advice to heart. I'm a cop. I arrest criminals. I know that kind of stuff. So I decided to create a game about what I know: Cops and Criminals.
In a world..
...where you can hire your own Cops and Criminals to solve and commit crimes...fund, train and equip them...interrupt your opponents ability to do the same...and win fame and glory...welcome...to...Cops and Criminals! Did you read that in the movie announcer voice like I did? No? Oh well...
Like nothing you've played before...
Traditional card games are turn based. I go. You go. I go. You go. Oh what fun. Snorefest. I've created a game that pits you and your opponent(s) - see what I did there? That parenthetical 's' means you could have more than one opponent! - against each other in a head-to-head, real time strategy game where you have to pay attention to what you are doing and what your opponent is doing. I'll wait for you to pick your head up from off the ground...
Now that you've got your head back on...I've created a game that has the same mechanics as other CCGs (M:tG, Y.G.O., etc.), but with waaaay simpler rules. All you have to do is hire Cops or Criminals, and solve or commit crimes. There are three phases to each turn. In each phase you and your opponent(s) are playing at the same time. On the last phase of the turn, you tally how many points you got from "Filed Reports" (Crimes successfully Solved or Committed and Criminals arrested or Cops fired). The first to 50 points wins. Pretty easy right?
Why am I here?
I have already created a 100 card series called "Initial Dispatch." I thought it would be a fun way to promote my game, and create my first expansion pack by going through Kickstarter and letting you awesome folks help me create my new expansion and help get the game out there! Obviously, since this is my brain-child, I really want to see it succeed and become a mainstream card game. I envision a 75 card expansion fueled by all the fine people of Kickstarter. Now if things go awesome and I get more than 75 cards, great! If I get less than 75 cards, well, I'll make up the remainder myself until I have 75. Why 75 card expansion? I dunno, because I like the number 75.
What am I going to do with $500?
First I'm going to Vegas and putting it all on the roulette table...J/K! I plan to purchase approximately $250 worth of my starter decks to give away to kids at the local game shops to build a customer base. The other $250 will go towards rewards fulfillment, website fees (gotta have a website, duh!), and other legal stuff.
What if I get more than $500?
A guy can dream can't he? Well, I'll up the amount of decks I'll purchase to give away. Look at what technology changes I can purchase to enhance my cards. Create a better website. And buy better legal stuff.
What do the cards look like?
Fairly easy to read but still neat to look at (at least I think so) there are 4 different types of cards. Cops and Criminals have the same functional face but are differentiated...
While Training, Equipment and Funding look different...
Crimes look completely different, but for good reason...
Finally, the Interrupt card...
What about the Rewards?
The $1 and $10 rewards will be on cards the same size as the playing cards, but will have the names of the $1 donors on one side and pictures and names of the $10 donors on the other. This will be an 11th additional card in the pack, but anyone who buys a pack will get this card and see those who made a donation and made the expansion possible.
The $5 donor will get a random card, whatever card I pull from my deck, and get a personalized autograph on that card thanking them for their donation.
$15 donors will get an expansion pack with 10 playable cards that has an additional 11th donor card showing just them as a Donor. They won't share the spotlight with anyone else.
$20 gets you a starter deck of Cops and Criminals: Initial Dispatch to play with.
$25 and I will make a 1-of-a-kind Cops and Criminal card of you (you choose Cop or Criminal) that you can play with. This card is a non-series card and only you will have it.
$50 and you actually get to design a series card that will show it was designed by you! Anyone who purchases a pack of expansion cards has the chance to get a card designed by you. Of course you'll get a copy for yourself, but that goes without saying.
$250 and you get every card in the Initial Dispatch and Kickstarter expansion series. That's 175 (or more!) cards.
Risks and challenges
Well, this is just an expansion to a game that already exists. If it doesn't work, no real loss there, as I can just make an expansion on my own. I want to share in the creative processes and broaden my games horizons by letting other people have access to it's soul. Obviously if this is a screaming success and I have a TON of people climbing on top of each other to be a part of this, it could delay the release date of the final product as I want to get all the cards in there before manufacturing begins. Any problems that surface will be handled one at a time with the largest fires being put out first.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
