About this project
What if you could measure and visualize the entire area around your marine vessel in real-time, day or night and in ultra-high definition 3D using a device one tenth the size of most radars at an affordable price? This capability would allow safe navigation of unfamiliar coastal areas and marinas, assist in finding those tricky to locate harbor openings, avoid potentially damaging wayward trash, buoys, logs, run-off debris, and marine mammals. Such a capability could provide 24/7 security monitoring also, and so much more. The development of a device to accomplish this goal has begun at Irvine Sensors and we are seeking investors to complete the development and produce the first 100 units. We call it Pathfinder™.

The Pathfinder™ surveillance system relies on state-of-the-art LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) technology to provide superior, high resolution, real-time, 360 degree, 3D video of the surrounding environment. It operates in a similar way to RADAR (RADio Detection And Ranging) in that energy is emitted from the device in a scanned manner, it reflects from nearby objects, and the time it takes for the energy to return is used to determine the range of those objects. The ranges are usually depicted as varying colors on a display of the area around the LIDAR unit.
Pathfinder™ utilizes low-power laser energy similar to that used in a simple laser pointer or laser range finder to generate images with ten times better resolution than RADAR allowing detection of smaller objects and more details of larger objects. Typical RADAR systems radiate a large amount of power and can require up to 7 feet of swept volume. Pathfinder ™ on the other hand produces no radiation that can potentially interfere with other on-board gear, is fully eye-safe, and is very small (only 700 cu cm).
Because the Pathfinder™ product uses a wavelength of light in the infrared (IR) band, night-vision and obscurant (fog, smoke, etc) penetration capability is provided for free thus making it possible to replace the function of a separate night-vision camera on your vessel.
Pathfinder™ comes equipped with built-in cutting-edge video analytics that will automatically alert you to potential dangers while on the move thus eliminating the need to constantly stare at the display attempting to interpret whether or not an object represents a real danger.
Not only will objects be highlighted and categorized for you, their threat level will be determined and annotated (box color). For instance, a moving object with a trajectory that will intersect with your path will be noted as a danger to the vessel requiring action on your part.
Pathfinder™ doubles as an active security system that will alerted you (visual cue and/or audible tone) if any person, vessel, or potentially dangerous object approaches.
The capabilities of your Pathfinder™ will be fully upgradeable through periodic software downloads. Our future development path includes autonomous pilotage support (providing object detection and avoidance commands to your existing autopilot), integration with your navigation system (improve geo-location), improved video analytics (situational awareness and security), etc.
Physical installation is straight forward – mount the small device with four bolts on a mast or elevated surface providing a 360 view of the area surrounding the vessel. One cable (provided) is necessary to provide power (9-36V) to the unit and carry the 3D data to the display. The data output is compatible with most marine touch-screen display products.
ISC expects the first Pathfinder™ units to be available to initial investors in 6-9 months.
Risks and challenges
We have learned how to successfully anticipate and manage risk for the type of LIDAR being proposed for Pathfinder. We have built a similar one! A navigation LIDAR was successfully developed and delivered to the US Army which uses the specific technologies in Pathfinder.
Realistically, there are two challenges to this project being successfully completed after funding:
1. Design issues –
Unpredictable problems with the design may surface during the design, manufacturing or test of this product. However, we will be applying our considerable scientific and engineering resources and process controls, developed over years of experience on similar product development efforts for military and space application, to the design of this product. Our experience does not just apply to the design of similar products using state of the art design tools, it extends to the active anticipation and management of risk.
2. Manufacturing problems –
Manufacturing can require a lot of expensive trial and error. However, our experience tells us that if manufacturing concerns are considered early in the design phase, this risk can be greatly reduced. This is exactly what we plan to do. Irvine Sensors follows a comprehensive integrated product team approach during all phases of product development that include Manufacturing and Quality Engineering experts with experience in transitioning designs to a wide range of customer unique and commercial applications. Additionally, we’ve built in a large margin for error into our Kickstarter goal and lined up several manufacturers we have worked with closely in the past. These steps will ensure that all predictable problems are mitigated proactively.
Remember, Irvine Sensors has greater than 35 years of experience bringing new product technology and system concepts to reality. This is not our first rodeo. Rest assured that we don't plan on stopping if we hit a bump in the road (or water in this case). We have already put years of passion and research into making sure this project is a success and we will always keep you updated on the progress of the project.
