WHAT’S THE STORY?

When we first encountered Carlos Jacanamijoy’s work, we were absolutely fascinated and absorbed by his powerful paintings. When we subsequently met him in person, we felt the deepest admiration for him as both a human being and an artist, who has developed his own career in the face of profound difficulties. Today, Carlos Jacanamijoy is one of the best-known artists in Colombia, but he began life facing poverty, violence, and discrimination because of his indigenous background. However, that didn’t impede him from developing an absolutely unique and mysterious artistic imaginary, which expresses universal truths. He changes the flora and fauna from nature and ceremonial objects into extraordinary artworks, paintings filled with a visual cacophony of colour and sculptures echoing the natural forms found in Colombia. He is a true alchemist in art. He is a role model for everyone.

With your support we can edit, distribute, and screen the short documentary ALCHEMY IN ART: THE VOICE OF JACANAMIJOY.

Furthermore we will create an arts scholarship for a Colombian student, from a less advantaged background, to enable them to visit Bogotá and have a master class, including all necessary art supplies, with Jacanamijoy and tour many of the museums and art galleries.

WHAT'S THE PROJECT?

ALCHEMY IN ART: THE VOICE OF JACANAMIJOY is a 30 minutes short documentary filmed in the Colombian Amazon, Bogotá, and London. The film chronicles the life of Colombian artist Carlos Jacanamijoy focusing on the astonishing trajectory from humble beginnings to achieving the status of ‘Maestro’ of the arts in his country. Carlos Jacanamijoy was the first indigenous person to graduate from the National University in Bogotá, and after that, he made a decision that would change his life irreversibly...he refused a scholarship to go and study in Paris, instead he went back to his region, Putumayo – at the entrance of the Colombian Amazon – to return to his memories and find his artistic style. That decision determined the artist that he is today. That decision also determined the humanitarian he was to become.

SO WHY DO WE NEED HELP?

ALCHEMY IN ART: THE VOICE OF JACANAMIJOY is an independent production, lead by curator / producer Sandra Higgins and director Lorena Cervera. Sandra and Lorena met in London at an exhibition of Jaca's (a nickname used by friends) work and they were both fascinated by the paintings. In discussion, they discovered that they would both be in Colombia at the same time, Lorena filming and Sandra doing research on Colombian artists. That was just the beginning of an adventure that took us from Jaca’s creative studio in Bogotá, to the borders of the rich Colombian Amazon, and the majestic landscapes of the Andes Mountains. Throughout this journey, we filmed hours and hours of personal interviews, family meetings and occasions, magical landscapes and the day-to-day life in Santiago, his birthplace, including the school he attended as a child and were he began to first show his extraordinary artistic talents. Back in Bogotá we filmed the day-to-day painting at his studio, his interaction with influential people in the art world, and his permanent rebellious attitude towards any discriminatory 'class' distinctions he came across.

Carlos Jacanamijoy is not only a gifted artist, he is also a reflection of his origins. He is aware of the indigenous condition, he knows that today Indigenous peoples are among the worlds' poorest, and he works hard to change that. Therefore, we believe that this documentary is necessary not only because it portrays the art of a distinguished artist, also because it captures his social commitment with his family, land, and the indigenous community.  We believe that Jaca is the voice of many indigenous people who can't be heard. He is able to speak for them and our documentary will be another step towards making his voice heard not only in Colombia but internationally as well.

THERE’S MORE!

ALCHEMY IN ART: THE VOICE OF JACANAMIJOY explores the life and work of the internationally acclaimed indigenous-Colombian artist Carlos Jacanamijoy. It charts the development of his unique and powerful imaginary, uncovering the manner in which he was influenced by the rites and spiritual beliefs of the Inga community and the mysterious natural world in which he grew up.

Carlos Jacanamijoy was born in Santiago a small town in the region of Alto Putumayo, Colombia, in 1964, at the entrance of the Colombian Amazon. His father was an important shaman who travelled through South America by foot along with his mother to discover and learn new planted-based medical treatments. In this powerful indigenous environment, Jacanamijoy started building his imaginary, strongly shaped also by the consumption of ‘Yagé’ or ‘Ayahuasca’, a medicinal and hallucinogenic brew he used as an access door to the spirit world. These psychedelic experiences would later become apparent in his painting through wild combinations of exuberant colours and textures. The discrimination he suffered at school during this period, due to his indigenous background, would also come to affect him later. At the age of 13 he decided to become a painter.

"Entre luz y sombra sin temor"
"Entre luz y sombra sin temor"

Jacanamijoy attended different Universities to study Fine Arts, and in 1990—a period in which the indigenous were still considered to be second-class citizens—received a Masters in Plastic Arts from the National University in Bogotá. During the graduation ceremony he and his family became the centre of attention due to the colourful traditional costumes they wore. His academic experiences educated him in the European avant-garde movements, such as figurativism, expressionism, and abstraction, which inform his artworks. However, when Carlos got a scholarship to go and study in Paris, he refused it in order to return to Putumayo, where he started his artistic investigation. Thanks to this decision he developed what today is known as one of the most original oeuvres in Colombian art.

As Carlos’s boldly idiosyncratic style began to emerge, he turned his attention towards expressing his roots through the techniques he had learnt during his studies, remaining loyal to his indigenous background and combining traditional content with contemporary form. His aim was to give visual expression to the culture he knew and loved, through the use of personal memories, native symbolism, a vivid colour palette, and the representation of the rites and spiritual beliefs of his people.

Carlos’s work provides aesthetic shape to an extremely complex personal universe that after years of persistent effort is finally beginning to be recognised, not just in his own country, but internationally as well. The documentary aims to reveal the unique artistic style that Carlos Jacanamijoy has developed over his lifetime. The magnitude of the character and his eventful life mark the project narrative structure, which continues to be a chronologically told biography. The filmic journey begins with his childhood, and takes us through a series of formative life-events -his academic years and retrospective trips-, and culminates in his return to his own culture though his artwork.

Risks and challenges

We have already filmed most of the footage and, according to the reactions to the teaser, we are confident that we can produce a great short documentary for a worldwide audience.
However, after investing a considerable amount of money in the initial filming process, we can’t afford to provide the additional funds and resources to finish the documentary (editing, post-production, subtitles, distribution, and screenings).
Therefore, your contribution will help to make this documentary possible.
