Mega-Bit: Figures Inspired by SEGA® Genesis®
New from So Analog... officially licensed figures that bring classic Genesis® cartridges to life!
So Analog is a brand I developed to bring life back into the long dead forms of technology that many of us grew up with. In my world, R.I.P. stands for Retro Inspired Products.
Sega approached me at San Diego Comic Con in 2013. So, Mega-Bit has been on a long development path. You can read up on the history here.
Doing officially licensed product has a variety of challenges. So, when Sega approached me for a 2nd time, I had to reevaluate the situation. It's taken almost a full year to get to this point, but we were finally able to come up with a deal that works for both of us.
I sculpted the body in Rhino based on the classic Sega Genesis cartridge. With his hands and feet attached, he stands 4.5" tall and 7" wide.
Tooling the body is a large part of the cost, so I decided to use the existing 10-Doh! hands and feet to save some tooling cost. However, one of the early stretch goals will be to create new hands and feet voted on by backers.
These Blank Mega-Bit figures are for all of those people that want to create their own classic Genesis games.
A $35 pledge can get you any of the standard matte black figures with blue eyes.
The "Kickstarter My Heart" label was used for all the KS rewards for my 1st KS campaign. I wanted to keep a part of that theme going for this campaign.
The "Not For Resale" Sonic was the game that came with the actual Sega Genesis console. This version will only be available during this Kickstarter campaign. The normal Sonic version will be available after the Kickstarter.
This year is the 25th anniversary of the Sega Genesis, so I wanted to create some Kickstarter Exclusive to commemorate that milestone. A $50 pledge will get any of the 25th Anniversary Mega-Bit figures. Each will be Vacuum Metalized (Shiny Chrome) in different colors with Metallic Labels.
XXV Mega-Bit is the only VUM figure that you can add on to any other pledge level.
For this "Kickstarter My Heart" version of Mega-Bit I used Green VUM to represent Kickstarter's color scheme. He also has two and a half hearts to represent the 25th Anniversary.
These versions are limited to 200 per style and will never be available after this Kickstarter campaign.
If you're a high roller you can chip in for any of these combo packs.
Adding additional figures will be easy. After you've selected your Pledge Level, you just have come back and click "Manage Your Pledge". Then increase your pledge level to compensate for what you are adding. Once the campaign is successful, you'll receive a survey and can list out what items you paid to add on.
Risks and challenges
Time is the biggest challenge on this project. The plan is to get these done before the year is over, so it's still part of the 25th Anniversary of the Sega Genesis. I've already invested over $7,000 of my own money to jumpstart the tooling and make sure that will happen. I'm using the same factory that I used for Mini 10-Doh! Series 2, so I know the quality will be as good as it can be.
Pledge fulfillment is always a huge task and largely depends on the number of backers. I learned a lot from my 1st Kickstarter, so this one should go even better.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
