Hi, I'm Rahdo. Almost a year ago, I grabbed my iPhone and started recording gameplay runthroughs of my favorite board and card games, and hosting them on Youtube. You can check out my series at
I do it for fun, not for profit, as a way of sharing my enthusiasm and passion for the boardgaming hobby, and helping like-minded board game geeks choose which of the myriad games on the market are right for them.
Now, a year later, I'm at a crossroads. I've recently retired from full time employment, and can no longer afford to buy all the latest and greatest boardgames. This is fine, as I've got more than enough games to keep me and my wife entertained for years to come, but I would like to keep producing run-throughs of the hottest games on the market.
That's where you come in.
By backing the RAHDO RUNS THROUGH... Kickstarter campaign, you're funding my ability to continue to produce videos of all the latest, hottest games, ranging from the big games of the moment like Seasons and Police Precinct, to the soon to be released hits like Rialto, Roll for the Galaxy and the the Lords of Waterdeep: Scoundrels of Skullport expansion.
Here's how it will work:
All the money raised will go towards the purchase of new games for filming, and all the expenditures of this fund will be exactingly and publicly detailed for all to see, ensuring total transparency.
In return for your donation, you have access to a variety of rewards, most of them revolving around the idea of helping to shape the direction of the Rahdo Runs Through series. As an investor, it only makes sense that you should have a say in what direction the video series will take!
Here's a list of the various rewards and how they work, spread amongst the different backing levels. If you can think of any other interesting rewards that might tempt you to back, please contact me with the link under my picture up above, or come to this thread on Boardgamegeek to join the conversation! If there's one thing you'll soon find out about me, it's that I'm very engaged with my viewers, answering every question posted, ever! --famous last words :)
Microbadges - every level backer will get a microbadge to apply to their Boardgamegeek account. Of course, if you don't have a Boardgamegeek account, this won't do much for you, but it's still on offer! :)
Voting for videos - The first three games of every month covered by Rahdo Runs Through will be voted on by Kickstarter backers, from my collection of games. An online voting service will be used to tally votes, and the higher you pledge, the more of these 3 games you will be able to vote on. This voting system will be in place until the fund runs out, which fingers crossed, won't be for quite a long time!
In addition, at certain backing levels, you will be able to specify a game to be filmed, regardless of the popular vote, so if you really want to see a game covered, this is your chance to make it so!
Voting for Games - at higher levels, backers will actually be able to vote for the games that are bought with the fund. You're putting in money after all, so why not have a voice in how it's spent? Votes can be cast for any game on this wishlist. 1 out of every 4 games bought with the fund will be chosen by Kickstarter backers in this way, and like voting for videos above, voting for games take place until the fund runs out.
In addition, at certain backing levels, you will be able to specify a game to be bought, ignoring the wishlist. This is your chance to see any game covered, provided it's not too expensive (shipping included) to receive in Malta.
Playdates - several people have said they'd love to play a game with me and my wife, and would even be willing to pay for it, so who am I to say no? We'll be able to connect with Skype and via any online boardgaming portal to play a game as a prescribed time, with anyone in the world. Why not - gaming is fun! Note: playing just with me can happen any time, 24 hours a day, but with Jen & me there will be more limited time frames, to be worked out with the backer.
Co-hosting - if you'd like to appear in a Rahdo Runs Through video as a co-host, now's your chance! We'll record a split screen discussion/debate/argument/love-fest between you and me as part of my 'final thoughts' on a game of your choosing, and it will be posted on Youtube. Instant stardom!
Glass art - my wife is a talented professional glass artist, and has offered to create a beautiful and completely unique reward especially for the highest backer level. It could be a pair of earrings, a pendant, or even a game piece like a start player marker, or a set of player score markers! She'll work in your preferred colors, and we'll ship it to you free of charge, anywhere in the world!
Well, let's cut right to it! Stretch goal (a new camera to make higher quality vids) ACHIEVED!
The actual camera itself has yet to be decided... I've made a post on AVS to get some advice from camera buffs, but would love suggestions from you guys as well, if you have any experience in these matters! :)
Will there be more stretch goals? Well, I did have a plan that had to do with a new feature for Rahdo Runs Through, but turns out that idea broke all kinds of Kickstarter of rules, so let's not speak of it again (you can see the updates for more on that misstep I made!). However, there's been some positive response to the another notion that I proposed, which you can also learn more about in the project updates (complete with videos).
As always, feedback is much appreciated!
Risks and challenges
Not really anticipating any particular challenges or risks - other than maybe laryngitis! Last year (my first year of making videos), I was averaging about 1 a week, and that was while working a full time (often overtime) job. So with that out of the way, I'm pretty confident I'll be able to get 3+ videos a week done now (on average), so that should be more than enough videos to cover all the particular backer bonuses I've listed. :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
