About

I'm a graphic designer, a Jazz fan, and a loyal disciple of posters. This piece illustrates the development of Jazz up to about 1970, with artists named in each genre and time period.

The posters (18x24" and 24x36") will be printed on 80# 220GSM Matte archival stock with a reputable print house who I have worked with for years. They do daily color verifications and use premium inks that stay true for years.

Also doing stickers - 3 for $5!

Story

I've always been interested in Jazz, mostly due to the presence of its influence in the work of Hip Hop producers like Nujabes and J Dilla. However I found it difficult to delve into what I considered "real jazz" at first simply because it is such a rich and diverse genre - I didn't know what to look for to find more of the kind of Jazz I liked. That changed when I took Charley Harrison's History of Jazz Class as an undergrad at UCLA: learning about the development of each subgenre and how they related to the history and cities they developed in (the frenetic pace of NYC and Bebop vs the laid back vibes of Cool and West Coast Jazz) not only helped me figure out what artists I would enjoy, but gave me a greater appreciation of the ones I didn't like on first listen. If you're a Jazz noob like me, I hope this helps you learn more about it. If you're a Jazz genius, well I hope you think it looks cool enough to hang on your wall.

Production

A Note About Artist Categorization

One of the beautiful things about Jazz is its fluidity and dynamic nature.  Many artists defy neat categorization, but I have used my best judgement and received feedback over a few iterations to give an idea of where on the jazz spectrum each artist's work lands.

Risks and challenges

I have had several successful projects, two of which involved printing and shipping posters. I am very prepared for any issues anywhere in the production line and have a relationship with my printer to quickly deal with any mishaps.
