About this project

My family will be designing and building a Little Free Library for our neighborhood in Stamford, CT.  The library will be installed at the edge of our property bordering Knickerbocker Avenue.  Many commuters and neighborhood walkers pass by this spot.  The library will be a friendly invitation to "Take a Book, Leave a Book".

Our intention is for this library to build a small sense of community in our neighborhood.  We hope that it adds just a little bit of whimsy, and hopefully causes somebody to smile every day.

We are committed to this project, as we have already registered the intent to build our library with the Little Free Library organization.

Our library is number 9765
Our library is number 9765

The finished project will look similar to the library that is pictured above.  We will need to design and build this library from scratch.  The library will hold enough space for approximately 20 or 30 books of various types for children and adults.

Your pledges will go directly towards purchasing materials to complete the project: wood, fasteners, hardware, shingles, weatherstripping, concrete, the post structure, etc.

UPDATE (4/21/2014)

According to the map page of the Little Free Library website, our library will be the first in Stamford, and also the first in the long corridor between the Bronx and Milford!

Risks and challenges

Our greatest challenges will be designing the project, weatherproofing the library (it will be installed year-round), and the potential for vandalism (though this is apparently quite rare).

Our stretch goals involve connecting the library to the Internet as a part of the "Internet of Things". This will be a challenge, as solar power, batteries, and custom Arduino software will be required. There is no guarantee that we will be able to make this work, but it's definitely on the radar.
