About

Hello friends. I am a father of a nine month old boy and am very busy so I'm going to make this campaign as short, sweet and densely packed with info as possible. This won't be the slickest campaign you'll ever see on here but I hope it will give you all of the info you need. 

Psi is a video game that combines several of my favorite influences:

  • My lifelong love of video games, specifically ARPGs (action role-playing games - Diablo 2 is still my all-time favorite, though I have played many of the latest games in that genre).
  • My love of comic books and of excellent superhero games like the Freedom Force series and Prototype 1 and 2. 
  • My interest in the cyberpunk genre. 
  • My continuing enjoyment of zombie fiction in all of it's forms. (I even wrote a zombie novel - "The Unliving: A Personal Tale of Zombie Apocalypse") 
  • My love of heavy, avant-garde music. Scroll down to hear some of the tracks from the game. ("Blue Solar Monkey" is the name of my ongoing musical project)

Psi is a PC game about a woman with extreme psionic (mental) powers (such as are featured in "Akira" and the "Galerians" games) who is awakened by an artificial intelligence called "The Protector" that proceeds to inform her that most of humanity has been turned into zombies by a nanobot plague released by an evil AI called "The Reaper." The Protector tells her that she is a genetically augmented clone and sends her on a quest to destroy The Reaper, thereby hoping to save what's left of humanity. She first has to make her way up through the levels of a subterranean lab complex and then through the streets of the devastated city above to confront The Reaper. Of course many types of deadly enemies and hazards block her path. 

As I said before, I love ARPGs and that is very much what Psi is. Instead of small, distant looking sprites as are found in most isometric games, I wanted to make the characters large and full of detail, kind of like a 2D fighting game such as Street Fighter or Marvel Superheros. The game plays like a beat-em-up with mental powers instead of hand-to-hand combat, I can't really call it a beat-em-up though as Psi only has one melee attack. The original Double Dragon was a game that amazed and enthralled me when it came out (yes, I'm that old) and there are definitely side-scroller elements in the game as well.

Psychokinesis is one of Psi's more devastating attacks that does extreme damage within a limited radius. Enemies destroyed by it are torn apart.

Though the game is primarily action based, the story is fleshed out in comic book/graphic novel style cut-scenes.

So far, 4 main acts are planned, each with 10 levels. Each level will have one of 5 different goals to complete it. For example, some levels have a force field or wall that must come down before she can progress and some have an especially powerful boss enemy that must be defeated.

Throughout the game, Psi will get constant upgrades and, eventually, access to 11 psionic abilities. Psi can call on an array of devastating powers ranging from genre standards like telekinesis and pyrokinesis to slowing time and her ultimate attack - the singularity blade. She also has powerful defensive abilities and traits like a force shield formed of pure will and quantum shift which briefly renders her impervious to all attacks and status effects. Enemies drop randomized power cubes (power-ups), most of which are STACKABLE, meaning, for instance, that if you pick up 3 double speed power cubes in a row, YOUR SPEED WILL BE 8x YOUR NORMAL SPEED.

All of her abilities can be made vastly more powerful by user-chosen upgrades throughout the game. Each ability has two branches of improvements. Psi's combat engine is deceptively deep. For instance, flaming enemies can set her on fire but not be frozen and electrified enemies can cause her biosuit to short out, causing her to temporarily loose all of its augmentations until her suit reboots. SYNERGIES are devastating power combos such as cryokinesis (a deep-freezing attack) followed by telekinesis or the much more deadly psychokinesis--these combinations do extreme damage.

Psi has 5 main UPGRADABLE stats: life, energy, precision (controls critical hit chance), speed and perception (increases chance of finding hidden doors, traps and the amount of nanoparticles found). Nanoparticles are the equivalent of technological stem-cells that can upgrade Psi's biosuit. The biosuit is the pinnacle of futuristic high-tech and regenerates her life and energy at uncanny speeds, based on it's main power source, the powercore which is also upgradeable. The biosuit has 5 stats of it's own which can be increased: armor, reflex (increases overall damage), resistance and boost, which increases power-up duration. Any upgrades purchased with nanoparticles are kept for the entire duration of the game and the campaign can be played through multiple times allowing for limitless biosuit stat increases. During the game, Psi will also find new visors that augment her offensive powers. At it's heart, Psi is a lean, mean action RPG with a wide variety of hazards, enemies, powers and upgrades.

What is an action game without enemies, right? The two main enemy types in Psi are zombies and robots. Both types have strengths and weaknesses, for example, robots can't be frozen or ignited and take double damage from electrokinesis. Each enemy comes in three basic levels - normal, apex and boss. Apex enemies happen to have a higher density of nanobot infection and are bigger, tougher and more powerful than the normal variety. There are four types of apex enemies: apex (stronger and quicker than normal zombies), turbo (moves faster than normal apex), brute (does more damage than normal apex) and tough (takes more damage than normal apex). Each has a unique coloration and an insignia that marks their type. They're also surrounded by a visible nanobot haze. The boss enemies are, of course, the most powerful and capable of killing Psi.

One of the more ghastly aberrations produced by the nanobot plague, the shadow stalker's flesh and even bones can become translucent, allowing it to stay invisible until it is attacking it's prey with it's electrified claws.

Here are a few tracks from the game. There will be many more tracks on the digital soundtrack and many more than that on the limited edition CD. 

 $5,000 - Basic game is funded. 

This will give me enough resources to focus on the game until it's completion and support my family. It will also allow me to create and ship all promised rewards. 

$7,000 - Two new enemies will be added.

If someone donates at the co-creator level, they can help me design these. 

$10,000 - A fifth act with at least 10 levels will be added.

I already have an idea for a fifth act but I would also be open to input from anyone who donates at the co-creator or ultimate level.

$15,000 - Limitless leveling of ALL stats, gear and powers will be added. 

As it stands, gear stats and some powers can be leveled infinitely. If I receive this much funding, I will find a way to make it so everything that can be leveled can be done so indefinitely (or at least until you get to 100% for certain variables).

$20,000 - A random mode will be added.

This mode will add a lot of variety to the campaign and an entirely new music score with 100 possible random music combinations.

$25,000 - You tell me. The fans can vote for what features they'd like to see added.

This would give me enough resources to focus on the game for longer and do some exciting things. Some of the higher tiers would likely make the planned release date later but also probably take the game to a whole other level.

I conceived of the plot of Psi in 2010. At first, I envisioned it as a cyberpunk Diablo 2 clone. I imagined several character classes at the time but the most compelling was the psionic assassin. Years later, after reapproaching the idea with a friend who has worked extensively in the video game industry, I decided to make a game focusing on the psionic assassin - Psi. I have been working on the game part-time for over 2 years now and much of the game is done. 

I have been a big fan of all things cyberpunk for a long time. I stumbled on the Akira comics before I even knew what "cyberpunk" meant and reading "Neuromancer" years ago felt like it changed my life. I've been playing video games for almost 4 decades now so I'm trying to put all of that experience into making Psi a fun, deep game. I've also been a writer for several years, an artist since I was 3 and a musician since I was 15 so I'm glad to see all of these interests come together in this project and I hope you'll enjoy the results! 

I plan on listening to fan input. I hope to get the game on steam early access for beta testing and so I can get lots of suggestions from the players. I also promise to leave regular updates on here if funding is successful. Eventually I hope to release Psi on iOS and possibly even android. Psi has the distinction of (probably) being one of the first video games ever made with almost 100% solar power. I live off grid and the library I often work at is powered with solar. How cool is that?!

Risks and challenges

I am no stranger to getting BIG projects done. I have built my own earthbag home, written four books and am in the process of building an intentional community from the ground up. I very much love working on Psi and will do everything in my power to get it done by June of 2016. That being said, I want to make it as good of a game as possible and will take as long as necessary to do so.
