I've spent the past year engaged in pre-production, recording, and mixing my first full-length record. I've funded everything myself using my own income and a moderate loan. Well, I'm at the point where no more loans can be had and I'd rather not go further into debt. However, I believe strongly in this record. Brian Viglione played drums (of the Dresden Dolls, Nine Inch Nails, World/Inferno Friendship Society, & Franz Nicolay). I also recruited some very good friends who I believe are some of the best musicians not just in the Philadelphia area but in the country (Carl Cheeseman, Phil D'Agostiono, Tony Mascara, and many others). I recorded the album at Turtle Studios in Philadelphia where it was engineered and co-produced by Jeff Hiatt and the aforementioned Carl Cheeseman. The record is for all intents and purposes, finished as far as tracking and mixing go (there are a few odds and ends to finish up).
I plan to seek funding from family, friends, and hopefully the Kickstarter community. I'll be upping masters to the internet to allow people to sample a few songs as well as passing out CD-Rs. I plan on utilizing Facebook, My Space, and Twitter to reach out to social and professional acquaintances and old friends as well. I also plan on utilizing the various relationships I have built with the fanbases of the local and international acts I've played with live and as a session musician. I've been playing in Philadelphia professionally for almost a decade, have shared the stage and recording studio with roughly a dozen artists from Philadelphia's folk, rock, & jazz communities. I have also toured Europe twice (2008/09) and the Northeast once (2008) with the World/Inferno Friendship Society. I've formed relationships with World/Inferno's fans, both in an effort to secure new fans for myself and to simply solidify the many friendships that I've developed by playing with the band so much the past couple years. A key part of raising this money will be utilizing my varied and extensive resume as a "side man", the reputation I've built up as a professional musician in order to bring my this record to life (quite literally). Since I have been used as a sideman regularly and still do work regularly (currently with Philly act Psalmships and the aforementioned World/Inferno & Franz Nicolay) I can also use upcoming gigs to promote this Kickstarter and beyond that, the record itself.
So what's the Kickstarter for?
Basically, I need to raise the money to press 1,000 copies of this record. The funds would be used to pay for the duplication/creation/printing of the CD's, 4 panel digipaks, booklet inserts (for lyrics, liner notes, etc) as well as promotional materials for the CD release (posters & postcards and the like) and any other technical preparations I may need to make for the performance. Since I focus so much on the lyrics in my songs and got a masters degree studying poetry AND am very active in Philly's poetry scene (with the New Philadelphia Poets) I'm also planning on using the record to cross-promote a chapbook I've self-published that is related in some ways to the themes on this record). I'm hoping that this two-tiered approach will benefit both facets of my artistic life and promote the idea that various artways are not separate or isolated mediums or endeavors—they are all connected, whether those connections exist between a community in a city or within a person's own aesthetic career.
