We are what we share.
In challenging times, we invite you to join us on a journey of hope, to meet and discover the wonderful stories of people all over the world who are creating a society based around sharing.
‘Generation Share’ is a media project, a photography book, a vlog series and more.
It’s a journey you can be part of.
The term ‘Sharing Economy’ has come to mean many things. I believe, it’s about building a whole system based around the sharing of human and physical resources --– from homes, food and goods, to knowledge, skills and ideas. It’s an opportunity to create a fairer, more caring society, that puts people and planet at its heart.
I’m Benita Matofska, a speaker, writer and campaigner for a people’s Sharing Economy. I’ve spent the last 10 years discovering the magic of the Sharing Economy. Now I want to share that magic, so I’ve teamed up with dear friend and photographer, Sophie Sheinwald to co-create the Generation Share project. Together, we are on a journey to photograph and document the people the world over, who are living lives based on sharing in all its extraordinary diversity.
By bringing these wonderful stories to life – from the woman who created a school based on sharing and brought the birds back to an impoverished, polluted neighbourhood; to the farmer-footballer who shares his love of gardening to bring peace between divided communities; we want to inspire and help more people discover the Sharing Economy.
Over the next year, we’ll be couchsurfing, mealsharing, swapping, borrowing, renting, collaborating on all continents of the globe. Through our vlogs and social media updates, you can share our journey as it happens.
The Big Plan
The ‘Generation Share’ book will be published in 2018. But it won’t be an ordinary book. We’ll take you on a journey to all continents, you’ll meet people from all walks of life. What unites them is their desire to share.
Design-led, filled with the stories of sharers told in their own words; beautiful photographs will bring their moving stories to life. We’ll use biodegradable materials with seeds embedded in the pages, so Generation Share’s very existence will share with the planet.
First – we’re travelling through Europe and to make this possible we need your help. Over the next 4 months, we’ll journey round the continent meeting Europe’s ‘Generation Share’. We’ll be on a shoestring, sharing as we go. We’re raising £5,000 for the European trip. We’ve already made a start. To continue, we hope you’ll share.
We live on a planet of finite resources, but our potential to share is unlimited. If we can unleash our collective capacity to share, there’s no end to what we can achieve.
Let’s do it. Together.
For together, we are ‘Generation Share’.
Risks and challenges
Generation Share is an ambitious project.
Our ultimate goal is to travel to all continents, over the next 12 months, to meet and photograph sharers worldwide. It’s a monumental journey, but we are up to the challenge.
After 20 years of working in television (mostly in travel programming), I know that the schedule can and will change; that a cyclone could hit in a country where they’ve never had a cyclone previously and that our equipment could be stolen before we’ve barely started.
This doesn't deter us. Sophie and I are used to challenge. We have travelled the world already -- photographing, videoing, interviewing and backpacking – on a shoestring. We know that things can and do go wrong.
We also know that the love of the global sharing community is strong.
We’ve learned the importance of trust and being open to adventure. Our love, passion and experience will guide us. When we run out of money, we’ll continue by sharing.
Sharing is what drives us, it’s our ethos. It’s what Generation Share is all about.
We ask you to trust us. Trust that we’ll complete this project. This is part 1 of the most important project of our lives.
Share with us and help to build a better world based around sharing.
