As a teenager, my father had two rules: "Never take sand to the beach," and "OPK. Other people's kids." I didn't know what he meant by that. But, if he were still here today, he'd be happy to know that I bent the rules a bit...
Imagine. Life is good, as good as it could get. You will remember that life-altering event that changes everything. You will never forget that moment when your whole world turns upside down and starts spinning the other way.
One day I am a happy-go-lucky married man living the dream, remodeling homes and doing other various projects between Austin, Texas and Hollywood, California while spending my fun time camping out in The Grand Tetons of Jackson Hole, Wyoming or back home in Texas Hill Country riding my Harley, catching some great live music. Then I get the call late one night.
"Sir, your daughter has been arrested."
What?! How many times did I wonder where my daughter was, lost in the big city of Los Angeles, hanging out with the wrong crowd, wasting her young life away fast? It had been months since I had seen her last and she didn't look good the last time I saw her. At least it wasn't the LA County Morgue calling me to identify the body. And this wasn't her first rodeo.
Then the officer told me, "She's pregnant." I could tell by the tone in his voice, he too was shocked. At least she was going to be safe tonight, I thought. Locked up. Probably still high on who-knows-what kind of drugs. And pregnant?
Everything changed for me that night.
This is a true story. Believe me, I could not make this stuff up! But I have been living it. All those sleepless nights wondering and worrying about my only daughter, swallowed up by the glitz, glamour and temptations of all that Hollywood had to offer came to a grinding halt that night I got the phone call. She wasn't going anywhere. For a long time.
I saw her during her numerous court appearances but could not talk with her, except going to see her in jail, even if for a few minutes. Those visits were awful. It was a circus getting in to see my daughter and those few, special minutes spent with her was talking through a dirty phone receiver and a one-inch Plexiglas window. We worked out a deal with her public defender, the assistant D.A. and the presiding judge to customize her sentencing for her long list of non-violent offenses (drugs and ID theft) to get her into California's Mother Prisoner's Program so she could be with her baby. When the gavel came down she received a 56-month sentence in a California penitentiary.
A few months later, due to budgetary constraints in California, that program was CANCELLED! And her baby was due in just a few weeks!
My wife, along with other concerned friends and family, suggested to me that the baby should go to foster care or adoption. WHAT!? Something resonated deep down inside my heart and soul, those two "options" did not fit this fractured family plan. Meanwhile, I lined up as much work as I could possibly manage back in Texas to make as much money as I could stash away. I had another idea: I had to save this precious baby!
RAISED BY WOLVES: THE DIAPER DIARIES is the story of making the ultimate choice and doing the only thing I knew I had to do and the huge price I would have to pay to save my grandson from the system after being born in custody. It wasn't going to be easy, but it was the only choice I could make. Against the odds, I picked this little baby boy up two days after he was born and we drove in 21 hours straight--back home to Texas.
Throw in the subsequent divorce, falling way behind in mortgage payments, wondering how I was going to be able to provide for Caleb, let alone myself. I sold my motorcycle, my beautiful vintage trailer and just about anything that wasn't nailed down. There was the issues of food, his formula, daycare whenever I could find a small job, diapers, the utility bills, and on and on... All the while I am watching this amazing little tiny baby boy grow up right in front of my eyes. He was my daily inspiration and he needed me to cowboy up. Somehow we would make it together. But I could not go on much further being broke!

How we will use the funding:
They say, "Write what you know." And this story comes all too easy, but the other side of making this story come to life is getting it published.
Here's a short grocery list of what we are doing right now to make it happen:
- Design and distribution of the e-book, perfect-bound soft cover and the hardcover editions. And an audio version too!
- ISBN and barcode registration
- Marketing costs
- Cover design and art costs
- And on and on. (It's like watching sausage get made, right?)
But the frosting on the cake will be The Book Release Event! Come celebrate with a great night of entertainment by some of Austin's and Nashville's best musicians, some very cool friends of mine to help celebrate the release of Raised by Wolves: The Diaper Diaries.
If music is the soundtrack for life, we will turn it up that night!
I want to thank you right now for joining with us and making this happen.
And share this special Kickstarter project with your friends on Facebook, Twitter and even the old fashioned way--around the water cooler at work. "Hey, you want to read an amazing real life story?"
