Enflux Exercise Clothing: Real-time 3D Analysis. Better Form
Enflux Exercise Clothing is a compression shirt and pants with ten small embedded motion sensors. It includes a free smartphone app that collects data from the clothing, and analyzes your 3D movement in real-time.
The app is like a digital coach. With Enflux, you'll improve your form, generate more power, and get better results, whether you're a world class athlete or learning to lift weights for the first time. And it's as simple as putting on a shirt!
On the smartphone app, you'll see a 3D animation of yourself in real-time. You can replay the animation after each set, or after your workout is over. You'll see many performance metrics, including the precise angle and velocity of the body parts that matter to you. You can rotate to see from any viewpoint, like having a camera from any direction.
Your results are automatically logged and stored, so you can see your progress over time and never have to worry about logging workouts again!
The app includes a digital coach that analyzes your form with accuracy only the most trained human eye can match, shows you where to improve, and even gives real-time audio feedback.
Meet Enflux Founder, Doug Hoang!
Using Enflux is as simple as putting on a shirt. You put on Enflux clothing, go to the gym, and start up the mobile app (available on iPhone and Android). Your clothes automatically connect to the app and start sending data.
You can preload your own workouts, get recommended workouts from trainers based on your goals and training history, or just enter each exercise as you go.
While you exercise, Enflux automatically records your body. It seamlessly integrates into workouts - look at your phone as often as you’d like. As long as it's within 30 feet of you, it records everything you’re doing.
If you’re wearing headphones, you get real-time audio feedback on your form, speed, tempo, and power.
Compare to your past performances or to an ideal movement with the ghost animation. Rotate the image to see yourself from any angle. Instead of guessing if your form is correct, with Enflux you will know!
Results are logged automatically. Check your progress over time. Share workouts with friends, coaches, and trainers. Trainers can comment on client workouts remotely. The 3D animation for every rep is stored, as well as the metrics listed below.

Enflux clothing is a compression shirt and pants, each with five small 3D motion sensors. These are the size of a dime, and they collect data from each limb of your body.
The shirt and pants each have one central module, in the middle of your chest and on your pants like a belt buckle. The central modules are fully integrated into the clothing.
It's all connected together with specially designed electrically conductive fabric, which is stretchy and durable.
Enflux is machine washable. The entire system is sealed to keep out sweat and water.
You charge with a USB, just like a smartphone. We use bluetooth low-energy to get over 2 weeks of daily use.
We are athletes, coaches, trainers, and tech geeks. We're friends that all share the same passion - bringing exercise into the 21st century!
Enflux began when Doug and Eli, former college roommates, made sensors to analyze motion in racecars. Doug was training for a triathlon and got injured. He started studying running form, and realized he could use the same racecar sensors on his legs to collect data while running. That’s how the idea was born!
Doug reached out to Mickey Ferri, a sports-obsessed Ph.D. economist and data scientist from a family of NBA players. Mickey ran track and coached sprinters in the NCAA.
Ian manages Enflux’s business strategy and operations, and Matt creates the 3D animations and writes the software.
Enflux fits like compression and yoga clothing on the market today. We offer a wide variety of men’s and women’s sizes. Don’t worry about choosing your design and size today, we will follow up with a backer survey where you can pick your design and size after the Kickstarter.
Below are some of the designs we have tested already. We’ll be finalizing the colors and designs offered based on the input of our backers! If you have a great idea for a design, we’d love to hear your thoughts and make it a reality when we produce our finalized Smart Clothing.
We are working with manufacturers and exercise experts we trust to build and deliver this product to our backers in March 2017.
The initial release will support weight training, plyometrics, and running. The app will include over 50 of the most popular weightlifting, bodyweight, and running exercises.
Then, we will expand to other sports and movements, like Yoga, Basketball, Cycling, Baseball, Golf, Football, and Volleyball. These are all just app updates away. We'll be asking our backers which sports to feature and listening closely. By backing this campaign, you can help us decide!
Enflux is partnering with trainers across the United States to offer personal training sessions where you can try it out before you buy. We'll begin training sessions in Summer 2017.
We’re currently in the cities below, and are working to expand to even more.
Down the road, trainers with clients using Enflux will be able to track their clients’ progress and provide remote coaching, even when they aren’t physically present.
This is our progress. When we started 3 years ago, we used many off the shelf parts, and we weren’t making clothing at all. Initially, we were making a fitness band, but as we developed our technology, we realized the inherent limitations to this approach.
Sensor strap units enabled us to test on several different locations on the body. This also allowed us to test our software quickly as we honed our hardware to meet our specifications and quality standards.
In order properly analyze exercise form, we needed to do full capture of the motion of the human body, and realized we would need to integrate our sensors into clothing itself. We have been focused on making clothing that is comfortable, machine-washable, has a long-lasting battery, and works well with the software we have developed for smartphones.
After testing with hundreds of athletes and analyzing the output of the motion, we began integrating our sensors into the Enflux Smart Shirt and connecting them by traditional electrical wire to the main module.
While not a practical solution, using electrical wire in a shirt allowed us to validate and prove out our assumptions. Next, we incorporated our electrically conductive fabric designs and began to test to meet a key specification: machine washability. What good is workout clothing if you have to dry clean it?
The washing machine is a surprisingly harsh environment. Where a space shuttle launch puts 3 g’s of acceleration on the human body, the washing machine puts up to 90 g’s of force onto clothing. In total, it took us 7 iterations to meet our specs and find the right supplier.
The app development is a very large project. We have already created and tested a very easy to use interface to support our current weightlifting activities.
To address the fact that people are all different, we built our algorithms around the Kinematics of Human Motion (Vladimir Zatsiorsky) who provided a basis to estimate limb length and weights for people of given heights and body types. We can capture the 3D motion of the human body to a smartphone, count reps, and track advanced exercise metrics.
Thank you and we appreciate your time and support!
The Enflux Team
Risks and challenges
Enflux is pioneering mass manufacturing of machine washable smart clothing with embedded motion sensors. To achieve comfortable clothing at an affordable price, we have made every effort to commonize and use pre-existing parts and manufacturing techniques from race car engine design, rocket science, and high performance fabric manufacturing. We developed our own electrically conductive fabric that is incredibly durable and elastic. Our team has years of manufacturing experience bringing complex products to market with very low failure rate, and great relationships with manufacturers who understand the ins and outs of manufacturing our product as well as we do.
Quality coaching feedback from an app:
Enflux is partnering with some of the most knowledgeable coaches and athletes in the world in an extensive year long beta testing program to continue developing and validating the app. We are testing on athletes of various skill levels, shapes, and sizes to ensure that the app gives quality coaching feedback to everyone.
We intend to begin shipping all pre-ordered units of Enflux in March 2017, which should give us plenty of time to manufacture the clothing and develop a high-quality app. However, please keep in mind that with new products, issues may arise that are out of our control.
As we continue to enhance Enflux Smart Clothing, we promise to keep our Backers up to date via Kickstarter. Our team has backed Kickstarter projects before. Between just the founding members. we have backed over a dozen Kickstarter campaigns dating back to 2012. We have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. We intend to deliver an extremely high-quality Enflux experience to you, so we may make adjustments along the way. If we make any changes in the development, manufacturing, or delivery phases, we will notify all of our Backers immediately.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
