Stretch Goals Updated April 4!
In over one hundred years I have been doing non-sport cards I have amassed a large collection of unused, unpublished art, unused card designs and cards, commissions, April Fool's jokes and one-offs. I was interested in doing a set that wasn't tied down to one, limiting theme, but rather do a set of retro cards in the same vein as the Topp's 75th Anniversary set. Since this is the 100th anniversary of Acheron Mint it seemed a perfect opportunity to release a set celebrating some of the greatest cards of the last century. To gauge interest in a larger set of 20 cards I decided to Kickstart this small 6 card preview set. This is a small project and my first Kickstarter in over 2 years.
Based on the cult (and public domain) film A Boy and His Dog, itself based on the Harlan Ellison novella of the same name, the Kickstarter exclusive promo card has all the style and grace of something you'd expect from a gum card made in 1975.
This six card preview base set in mostly 1930's - 1950's inspired like my other non - sports sets, but if I decide to release a 20 card set of AMA the 60's and 70's and possibly the 1980's will be covered. I picked a few of my favorites. Robots, Zombies and UFO's seem like a good choice.
Also Included with every Kickstarter pack is a randomly inserted sketch card of a non-sport subject!
The 8.5 x 11 Kickstarter exclusive print is a classic Black Mask pulp cover with Dashiell Hammet. Hammet nearly made it into my previous Ground to Pulp set but I went with H.P Lovecraft instead. I had later planned to do a Black Mask set of detective fiction writers and their characters that never materialized.
As always I will be offering prints for this set. This will be the only time these prints will be available, as I am not in the print business. I usually get requests for prints after the campaign has ended but only print enough to fulfill rewards, so if you want them, pledge now! Hang these stunning 8 1/2 by 11 inch prints in your home, office, den, or bat-cave with pride.
An array of rewards is offered for this project, though fewer tiers than my previous sets because most of the original art for these cards is long gone or doesn't exist in the case of digitally created art. Like my previous projects, prints will only be available through Kickstarter and will not be available for retail. So pledge now if you want them!
Risks and challenges
The artwork is complete and the files are ready to go. There is always some frustration and delays from dealing with a commercial printer, but once the funds are released, essentially all there is to do is click a few buttons to send printing orders off. My previous six Kickstarters have all shipped no later than a few weeks off schedule. I've been doing this sort of thing for over a decade now, and shipped to every continent except Antarctica.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
