As makers, we have ideas all the time––to improve things, to make our lives better. But to make our ideas happen, we need access to tons of machines, materials, and tools that are too expensive.
That’s why we created Makerarm: a complete digital fabrication system packed into an affordable robotic arm that makes just about anything, anywhere.

Makerarm is multi-purpose
Makerarm works with interchangeable heads for countless applications.
It 3D prints: Makerarm is not confined to a box and can 3D print with both filament and resin.
It carves and mills: Makerarm includes high-speed desktop milling (light duty) and carving. You can mill on a variety of materials including plastics, wood, and soft metals right on your desktop. You can even hook up heavy duty flex shaft tools such as the Dremel Fortiflex to Makerarm for power-carving, grinding, or shaping applications (with speeds up to 23,000 RPM!).
It laser engraves: Makerarm’s high power 500mW laser head (405nm) engraves and etches on plastics, wood, leather, cardboard, and more.
It picks and places: Choose from vacuum pump coupled suction cups, electromagnetic heads, or grippers to carry out pick and place operations.
It assembles: With the assembly heads, you can automatically place and fasten screws, carry out gluing, and perform pick and place functions.
It's a PCB fab: PCB milling, drilling, solder-paste dispensing, pick and place assembly (PCBA), and automated soldering take the hassle out of prototyping.
You can also add custom tool heads: A special hardware development kit (HDK) will allow owners to create their own custom tool heads for an unlimited number of projects!

Large work area: Makerarm has one of the largest work areas among desktop 3D printers. Makerarm's reach is 15.7 inches long, 31.4 inches wide and 10 inches high for a total work area (in a semicircle configuration) of 378.5 square inches.
Auto-leveling: Makerarm allows you to print and build on any flat surface, consistently and reliably.
SCARA: Makerarm is a 3 axis (expandable to 4 axis) Selective Compliance Assembly Robotic Arm (SCARA).
Trainability: Makerarm's teach mode allows you to train the arm to repeat specific actions flawlessly.
Collaboration: Makerarm works in collaboration with other Makerarms to accomplish specific tasks such as pick and place.
Wireless control: Wi-Fi connectivity lets you control the arm from any device, anywhere.

Hardware development tool kit
If you'd like to add our hardware development tool kit to the rewards on your right, simply add $49 to your pledge amount. The hardware development kit will allow you to design and create custom tool heads for your Makerarm.
Custom software: Makerarm.io
The Makerarm.io control software is currently under development and will ship free with the arm. It is browser-based and connects to Makerarm remotely via Wi-Fi through any device (smartphone, tablet or laptop/PC). The UI lets you:
- View and control Makerarm in 3D.
- Train Makerarm to perform specific functions.
- Load designs and models for one-click 3D printing, milling, laser engraving, and more.
- Connect third party apps or create custom scripts.
The UI detects what tool head is attached to Makerarm and only displays options and information relevant to that particular functionality.
Makerarm.io isn’t the only software that works with Makerarm. You can use your favorite CAD/CAM and tool path generation software such as Autodesk Fusion 360.

How to get making in 3 steps
Mount the arm
After unboxing the arm, simply mount it on your desktop or workspace with the included base plate and four standard bolts.
Pick your preferred tool head
Slide your tool head of choice onto the arm. Lock the tool in place with the screw-on end cap. Snap-fit the connectors together.
Connect and get making
Log on to www.makerarm.io, and connect the arm to the free web-based control software with just one click. Place/insert your choice of material, load your model/design, hit slice, and press play to start making.
Zaib Husain holds a Bachelors in Finance from UT Austin and a Masters from London University. She has previously worked for Dun & Bradstreet and now advises private clients and emerging companies on startup financing.
Azam Shahani is a skilled engineer and avid maker. With a Bachelors in Computer Engineering, Azam loves to tinker with robotics and digital fabrication technologies.

We have partnered with Dragon Innovation, who has certified that Makerarm can be manufactured on time and within budget. Dragon specializes in manufacturing hardware products and is behind some of the biggest names in the industry such as iRobot, Pebble, Makerbot, and more.
We have three fully working prototypes that are undergoing internal testing. These units have been developed with our manufacturing partners in China to make sure the design is ready to hit the factory. Our engineering team spent several weeks on the ground in Shenzhen, China with factories and suppliers to optimize our supply chain and logistics.
The Dragon team has thoroughly reviewed Makerarm's design for manufacturing (DFMA), BOM (Bill of Materials), as well as the production plan and have given us their seal of approval that the project is ready for Kickstarter. In order to bring the project to life, we must sell at least 250 units. Our target ship date for the retail unit is Fall 2016, and we cannot wait to get Makerarm to you!
Developer and beta test program
Once pre-production units are received in April 2016 they will be shipped out to beta backers for testing and feedback. The Makerarm team will incorporate user suggestions into the final design.

Risks and challenges
We have taken every step to ensure that Makerarm is manufactured on time and within budget (see our manufacturing plan on the campaign page for details). However there are always risks and challenges that can cause delays or setbacks.
While we have developed three working prototypes, we have not manufactured Makerarm on a large scale. As such, issues in terms of delivery may arise during mass production that we cannot predict.
