HAVE A LOOK AT OUR REWARDS!

The boys who loved their bicycles

Back in the seventies and eighties as kids, it’s pretty fair to say we fell in love with our bicycles. As children we saved up to buy our Diamond Back Viper BMXs, our first proper bikes, made of Cromoly, whatever that meant! We still wonder why Jonnie always had all the punctures, even when he borrowed Tim's bike. The appreciation of our bicycles past and present has never diminished, and to be honest, we still dream about the next bicycle or the new trick component.

Having now become parents, the bicycles and stabilisers are back, but for our children of the 21st Century the bicycle helmet is standard equipment.

The bicycle helmet

Over the years, while commuting, using our bicycles as transport, mountain biking or out on the road-bike we have asked:
"What do you do with your helmet, when it's not on your head?”

At home, we encourage our children use their helmets but they can’t find them, drop them, hang them by the straps, give them to you to carry, trip over them, or just lose them completely.

At university and work, the bicycle is an ever more popular form of transport but when you reach your destination, what do you do with your helmet?

With Helmetor®, you can finally say good bye to the frustration and exasperation of these dangling, tangling and wandering helmets.

What came next?

With a BA (Hons), a BSc (Hons) and a PhD, we brought our passion and unique perspectives from Art and Science together in this project. Taking to the drawing board, a number of possible designs were sketched out and these early drawings began to take on a life of their own.

We fabricated prototypes from various polymers and tested these on lots of bicycle helmets. We then had 3D designs printed, cast our own silicon mould and even managed to injection mould by hand.

As things developed, we worked in conjunction with one of the UK’s leading designers. Designs were further refined, consultants were consulted for material selection, finite element analysis was carried out and the material samples were tested to ensure they had the characteristics we required.

A full working prototype was CNC machined, and this too has undergone further rigorous testing in lab conditions and field testing.

We are now confident that we have a new, serious, durable, functional, bicycle component that makes sense, simply works and is ready to solve a long-standing problem for cyclists everywhere.

We are now ready to take Helmetor® to the next phase, making it available to you, the cyclist.

FEATURES

Helmetor® is a unique, lightweight device. The bike-mounted version attaches to your bicycle handlebar, while the wall-mounted version can be fixed to a wall, door or wherever needed.

How does it work?

Due to its intuitive patent-pending design, its lower arm acts like a leaf spring allowing Helmetor® to hold the helmet using a single air vent whether it is 3cm or 8cm long.

It is easy to use, attaching a helmet securely in one simple, single-handed movement.

  • Firstly, place the lower hook of the Helmetor® into an air vent.
  • Then, pull the helmet up and over the hook on the upper arm.
  • Now, your helmet is ‘Helmetored’, leaving your hands free to do, what hands are supposed to do!

You can lock your helmet onto Helmetor®

If you are out on your bike and need to lock it up while you nip into the shop, what do you do with your helmet? You know the feeling of everyone looking at you strangely as you walk around the shop wearing your helmet. No more! Just use a standard padlock, larger than one of your air vents, Helmetor® your helmet, and fit the lock through the loop of the Helmetor®.  An additional security feature is that the Helmetor® is clamped to the handlebar using a stainless steel hex head bolt, as most of your other bike components are, so further deterring the potential thief. A nylon locking nut keeps it extra secure.

How is Helmetor® fitted?

The bike-mounted Helmetor® is ideally positioned on the handlebar, close to the stem. This keeps it out of the way of lights, bells and speedometers. It also keeps the helmet out of the way when it is ‘Helmetored’.

Silicon inserts are provided in a range of sizes to fit a range of handlebars:

  • 22.2mm (this is the standard diameter for handlebar grips, etc. and kids’ bike bars are usually this diameter throughout).
  • 25.4mm (1") is the diameter found on millions of bicycles where it widens at the middle of the bar to be clamped by the stem.
  • 31.8mm is the new standard, and Helmetor® has no problem fitting this too.

Keep the spare inserts safe when you need to fit it to another bike.

The wall mounted Helmetor® is supplied with standard screws. To further enhance the security of the wall mounted Helmetor®, users could use clutch head screws or bolt it on, if required.

What are the options?

The Helmetor® mechanism is standard across both devices: the bike-mounted, or the wall-mounted version. Simply decide whether you want one, or both. See the pledge options listed on the right.

Next, choose the colour of your inserts. We’ll send you all three sizes for the bike mounted one. As you can see below, the colours are: green, red, grey, orange, blue and pink. Additionally, Kickstarter green is available, exclusively, during the Kickstarter campaign only!

WHY KICKSTARTER?

We have an advanced prototype that we now want to turn into a full production component. You can have Helmetor® looking after your helmet when it's not on your head, allowing you to lock it to your bicycle. It will make it easier for your children to know where their helmets are and so be more likely to use them.

PRODUCTION PLAN

We have a fully functioning, production-ready prototype. We have lined up manufacturing partners for the following components:

  • Injection mouldings - the bike- and wall-mounted Helmetor®, precision engineered for optimal performance.
  • Compression mouldings - the inserts for the bike- and wall-mounted Helmetor® will be precision engineered and in bright colours.

We have a team specifically prepared to assemble your orders, with every bike- / wall-mounted / colour combination you desire. This team will also package and post your Helmetors® with pride!

Production is scheduled to start once the campaign completes. If we make our target, here is our timeline:

December 2014 - The Kickstarter campaign ends and a detailed order will be submitted to our manufacturer for the injection and compression moulds to be made. Final quality checking and signing off on the tool should be completed in less than 6 weeks. We will place an order for the bolts, nuts and screws. We will also place the order for the packaging to be printed. Our assembly, packaging and delivery team will prepare to get your Helmetors® on their way with minimal delay.

January 2015 – We will have all the tools for manufacture and production will commence.

February 2015 – Production will be well underway at this stage and we will have a much better estimate for a delivery date from our manufacturer. Delivery will be made to our assembly, packaging and distribution team in County Fermanagh.

March 2015 - This month is the contingency, but we envisage that you will all have your Helmetors® in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

Risks and challenges

As this is our first manufacturing project of this nature we have enlisted lots of help from professional companies, consultants and advisors who do this every day.

Injection and compression moulding risks
Our prototypes are CNC machined and hand finished. When injection and compression mould tools are used there are a number of design and manufacturing considerations that are essential to a good quality final product. To ensure any risks are minimised our case designer and Dr Jonathan McCrea will all work together, with the tool maker to ensure this runs smoothly.

Supply risks
Minimal off the shelf parts are required, in addition to those being manufactured. All nuts, bolts, screws and packaging will be pre-ordered once we meet our funding goal to minimise the risk of delay.

Huge demand
If we meet our funding target many times over there will be the potential for a slight delay. One of the contingencies for this eventuality is that we consider a tool with more impressions to increase the production rate.

We’ve allocated some contingency time in our schedule to ensure that you will receive your Helmetors® on time. We will keep you updated, so you will know what stage we are at and when to expect delivery.
