The Friends of Medina County District Library work with our library system to serve our community and meet their needs. Nothing is more dear to our hearts than children.
When we learned that a community survey showed our county lags behind both state and national standards in parent and child reading time and children are starting kindergarten without the basic skills they need to learn, we wanted to do something.
That is how Busy Books was born! (We were also inspired by other libraries in our state that have created similar books.) These activity books, designed for children ages 2-5, reinforce critical early literacy skills. They are laminated and come with a dry erase maker so they can be used over and over. Production cost will be about $5 for each book. They will be distributed at our story times and through the library’s partnerships with the county health department’s WIC services and Head Start preschools. The books teach nursery rhymes, letter and number writing, drawing shapes, identifying beginning and rhyming sounds, colors, emotions and more. We even include recommended books available at our libraries to encourage practicing and furthering skills.
We are a group of volunteers, parents and grandparents who value literacy and the library. We want the best for all children. We want to give families and caregivers the resources they need to ensure children are ready to excel in school and in life. Please help us make a difference in our community. Reaching our goal of $2500 will allow us to make 500 books. If we exceed our goal we will make even more.
Risks and challenges
Since much of the assembly process for these books will rely on help from volunteers, there is potential for delays in completing the books. If we are not able to find enough volunteers it will slow us down, but will not keep us from making the books. Along with our community partners, we are very excited about getting these in the hands of local children. If needed, we can space out our distribution events to go along with the pace of production.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
